Haha.. it's not a bad thing.. I think most marriages come from people who met during college.

On a side note.. people are so fascinated by diamonds for marriage..

I think when I got married, I'd wanna propose to a gal who wouldn't care even if I just gave her a tied together string for a proposal ring.

lol... good luck with that.

I actually hate diamonds. My mom just insist on giving me diamonds. I prefer pearls.

Wow, these posts in regards to a engagement ring are pretty disturbing. It's pretty incredible how well entrenched the marketing is in the minds of women these days.
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/198202/diamond

Of course, even though most guys understand that the diamond itself is basically worthless, we do understand that it's the meaning behind it. It's still sad though. The funny thing is that we can create perfect artificial diamonds, carbon bond for carbon bond, yet these still aren't "real" enough for girls wink.gif I remember this discussion from back in college. Keep in mind, this was in a room full of materials science engineers, so everyone knew full well what a diamond actually is.

Forgive me for pointing this out, but that's not how you properly execute the "shocker".

Haha, for those wondering, the Suicide Girls are an alternative style nude modeling site. They happened to be at VGXPO in the booth next to the one we had for Pwned.com. They were awesome.

Haha, thanks for thelove Hermit. Miss coming around here and chatting with you guys. I will do my best to be around more. LOL

I'm somewhat offended by this post, not all girls care.

My friend and I have had this conversation several times before - there is nothing special about diamonds. Yes, I have a huge one and it isn't even from a man. I have a mother who cares about what society thinks and as a result I "benefit" from her need to spend random amounts of money on jewlery. I guess thats why I'm willing to take the ring from my mom and laugh about it - if I ever find a guy and he tries to give me that ring or a ring like that - I'd have to leave him, because he should know better.

FYI: I'm the girl that's okay with not even having the string as long as I have the love. Too bad I live in the land of stupid where guys find looks, money, and social standing to be more important than intelligence, and a true connection. It's funny - I get hit on more when they see the huge rock on my left hand then when I'm not wearing it at all...I don't understand males.

it's also disturbing how everything else that we enjoy and like is a result of marketing. adding to the fact that a diamond is worthless, people still pay alot of money for it, the whole diamond water paradox, we pay less of what we need to survive and more for the things that can live without. *sigh*

Not everyone can stand out of the crowd if there is no crowd to stand out from.

diamond or not, to that couple it symbolizes something unique only to their understanding. And if the guy has the money and prefers that a diamond is how he wants to symbolize their engagement to his girl no harm there. Each to their own.

Money is also worthless, we're the ones who put value into it, we're the ones who make it and depend on it. dry.gif Sure it's difficult to just let it all go and bring it back to nothing, but even way before money people used other things as currency, chocolate, coffee, sugar, salt, etc... we're always wired to measure things.

My apologies if I misunderstood anything but I'm just jumping into your discussion mid way.

Let me get this straight. Your mother gave you an engagement ring because shes concerned at what society will think of you? And you'd leave a guy if he gave you the same engagement ring as a gift, purely as a gift not as an offer of engagement?

Being approached more often because one has a ring on their finger is a result of the pursuer questioning why the said person has a ring, what makes them special, what makes them wanted by someone else. This curiosity makes them drawn to them because it is someone 'they cannot have', and as with many people, they want what they cannot have. This same thing applies for ladies.

Btw, may I ask how old you are?

Hi question987: Yeah, my post wasn't a direct response to yours at all, so no offense was intended. Like I said in my post, I understand the meaning and concept of giving something valuable like a diamond in my heart, but in my head it's hard to get past the fact that diamond engagement rings were an idea that was created in the early 1900s with an item that is artificially limited in order to induce higher prices. On that same vein, why don't guys get a gift for getting engaged? wink.gif

To bring this thread back on topic, I found this picture of myself the other day. Age 12 maybe?

Classy...
