^ not always true. $ doesn't = good photos...
just saying

have you tried shooting photos with a canon 1ds mark 3 with a 16-35/2.8 L switched onto program mode? if you can handle the weight... it'll almost always take great pictures with pop [pop is something you either photoshop or will get only from the highest quality lenses except on rare few occasions with perfect lighting]. expensive camera/lens combos nowadays take great pictures even when in default mode. they just dont take creative ones that require some creativity with different types of exposure.

I always thought creativity is what makes a photograph good. Silly me.

sharpness, contrast/pop are properties of the camera/lens.
creativity is in the exposure parameters and composition of the subject
a great snapshot carries BOTH these properties,
but c'mon... we're talkin simple self-portraits!
you don't really need creative exposures...
and composition is just your standard head or 3/4 shot

Me, recently. I cut my own bangs. I also cut my hair to shoulder length after I took this picture. When my mom saw my hair, she just told me I looked like a 16 year old (I am 23...).

You should smile it makes people prettier...

To us guys it's simple self portraits, to girls it isn't. If my friends ask me to take a picture with them I take it once, but when girls take it... Jesus don't get me started. Haha

I know photographers who take amazing "snapshots" with a Rebel XT.
I also know people that don't know what they are doing but with a great (expensive) set-up...
"Oooh depth of field is photography!"
Total waste of money.
Yeah I am bitter.

I don't believe a good "snapshot" needs to be perfectly sharp.
And a portrait is a portrait, wouldn't call it great if it's less than interesting.

ps. I hate wedding photographers that think they are artists.

pps. Okay, unless you're a "journalistic" type of wedding photographer.

They sell ice cream and sandwiches there in the summer, but since it's winter it was closed.

I don't like smiling for pictures. Actually I don't really like to take a lot of pictures of myself in general. I'm happier taking pictures of others. My friend tell me I look/act like the Emily the Strange character :]
