you rarely have to carry around textbooks. just leave them in your dorm (unless they specifically state otherwise).

Yeah when you go to lectures you don't need to carry your textbooks... I just take stuff I need to take notes with ^^... But if you want a backpack to carry lots of stuff, I think The North Face backpacks are really good... I have a Big Shot and a Yavapai and they're both awesome.

I've taken.. oh, I'd say about 20-25 classes thus far, and I'd say that there were a few classes where bringing in a textbook was helpful. After two years, just a few of my classmates decided to do the same thing. Bringing in textbooks help for some professors, and not so much for others. You really have to wait and see what kind of course you're taking and then deciding whether or not bringing a textbook in would be helpful.
I'm pretty darn sure you won't have to carry more than two textbooks around campus, so as a rule of thumb, try to fit in three textbooks-- sometimes your notebook(s) ends up becoming the size of a large, heavy textbook. Oh, and always make sure there are pockets for extra pens, pencils, mini-stapler, highlighters, post-it notes, etc. (some of the things that are small and adds little weight, but invaluable at those moments where it is a god send)

I just have a messenger bag because the largest number of books I ever carry is usually one, and last semester I didn't carry any, and the messenger bags are so much more convenient.

Some people don't even carry backpacks to their classes. They either have those big slouchy bags;i forgot what they're called. or some kind or purse, tote, whatever. Most people leave their books in their dorm rooms.

I alawys carry a backpack because I don't like to travel back and forth from my dorm through out the day so I usually end up taking some of my textbooks and just studying in the library between classes. That way, I'm not tempted to take a nap/watch tv/check out facebook and actually get some homework done. Here is my current back pack:
My Backpack
If you are going to be carrying your laptop around I suggest getting a backpack that states it has a place for laptops. Mine has a sleeve in the back pocket that has extra padding on both sides and a closure to keep it from sliding around. That extra padding comes in handy when hauling it around campus. Another thing you NEED to look for is a pack that is water proof. I had an LL BEAN my first year and it wasn't water proof. One day I forgot to grab my umbrella and of course it rained like mad.. all my notebooks got drenched.

ooo thanks for your replies, guys!
yea.. i heard about not needing to bring textbooks to class a lot, but on both tuesdays and thursdays i have a continuous 3-hour break, so i was thinking of heading to the library to do some studying during that time.
thanks again for your suggestions, i will definitely keep them in mind when picking out a backpack
