hey sorry if this question sounds really dumb but im slowly getting interested in cooking and i've been wondering how much rice/water do people use for cooking their rice?

reason i am asking is because my parents usually use 1:1 and compared to the rice i eat in chinese and korean restaurant, our rice is dry....

thanks

I usually add one extra cup of water to my rice. My mom hates soggy rice so even one extra cup makes her scowl .-.

I don't measure it out, but my general rule of thumb is I put enough water in the rice to cover it up to my 2nd knuckle on my finger when I lay my hand flat in the rice. It's always worked for me tongue.gif

Just one cup is good. I hate soggy rice. XP
I like dry rice. biggrin.gif

But you are right about the rice in Korean/Japanese restaurants. I don't know what they do with the rice, but it tastes soooo banging!

ours is 1:2. but i don't want our rice to be too soggy so what i do is, one cup of rice equals 2 (3/4 cups) of water.

For Japanese style short grain rice like Koshihikari, I usually add water to about 1in above the rice.

lol, I don't measure using cups or anything.

My grandma taught me to lay my hand flat on top of the rice and see where the water rises.

If it hits the the knuckles of my fingers, it's enough water :]

I eat Kokuho Rose rice brand, which can also be used for sushi.
If you get the water to rice ratio right, it'll taste like the rice from Korean & Japanese restaurants.
It also helps to soak it for 20-30 minutes before cooking.

my rice cooker has the lines which gives a good water/rice ratio. Sometimes, depending on the brand of rice, I would go under or above the line.. but I don't really know the exact measurements.. lol.

I go by the lines on the rice cooker, but I would assume it be 1:1 and then varies a little above or below depending on how you prefer your rice.

For every 1 cup of rice I use 2 cups of water.

I don't have a rice cooker, btw, I just use a regular pot...

Easy, I use the rice cooker. But all brands are not the same so I adjust.

my method is just for example if i have 4 cups of rice then would put only around 3.5 cups of water in the rice. I don't like soggy rice at all.
