Today, I switched on my computer, and did my usual things such as scanning my computer and signing onto MSN. I wasn't "too" active on the computer because it was still quite early and I only just woke up, but my monitor started acting weird.
First it switched itself off for a few seconds, then came back on again. Few seconds later, the screen just went all black, then it got back to normal. There was also a moment where the screen was just a screen of lines, blue lines to be specific.
I told my friend about this problem and she said it may be my monitor so okay, I assumed it was.
Then I just told another friend cos it's been bothering me all day because when I view pictures, or just look at the top of the computer windows, there is some additional colours on top...and for picures, let's just compare it to like an infrared picture but not so bad. He said it may not be my monitor...
So any idea what may be going on? I don't want to waste money on buying a new monitor if it isn't my monitor that's the problem.

Don't you have other things to test it on? Like plug monitor into a laptop or another computer?
Oh but ill say generally those are signs of a overheating video card. Most likely at the point of irreversible damage at this point.

try changing the resolution and refresh rate. It could be that you're trying to run an unsupported refresh rate or resolution, these are really easy to fix: control panel -> display -> Settings (for resolution) -> Advanced -> Monitor (for refresh rate). And hope that this is the problem, or you might have hardware damage, though, I would suspect that it would be more catastrophic.

heh.. have you tried checking the connections? try resetting your monitor to err default settings with those buttons on your monitor. like angelqian said, maybe its the resolution/refresh rate.
