My 15inch 2.4ghz Mac Book Pro is getting delivered to my workplace tomorrow. I wanted to know if anyone has put in non-mac certified SODIMM modules (2gb x 1) in their MBP? Yes, yes I know about the whole 3gb address issue in Vista.

My purpose is to bring the 2gb included to 4gb (and sell the 2x1 gb modules on ebay)

The memory I want: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231124
The memory I may end up getting: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820220243

I know that for A-Data PC2700 sodimms from years ago, people were both using them in PCs and Macs.

I am a die hard pc-user but I got a $2600 mbp for $1300 brand new. Also, it dual boots to vista/osx. Vista sucks..argh.

I'd rather not have to return the ram and pay a 15% restocking fee. Heh, can't wait to pop this machine open and put on some Arctic Silver 5 with ram-sinked sodimms!!

Thanks for the help! =)

nice laptop - from the specs it looks like that memory would work fine. do you know whether you're voiding any warranty by opening it up?

if it's 64-bit vista you're using, then all 4GB should show up... or if it's 32-bit, you can get anywhere from 3GB - 3.8GB depending on how much your hardware needs in terms of memory addresses

what the? where are you going to be putting the AS5?

-edit-
i just googled the subject and apparently if your MBP is the older "Revision A" version with the regular core duos, then the max that's supported is 2GB

Yeah it's the Santa Rosa, so 4gb is definitely supported. I read that OSX can't address more than 3gb--even though it's supposed to be 64bit (Or will that be Leopard?). IN any case, yeah I was going to install 32bit vista and get 4gb - Video Memory - memory in use: so maybe around 3.4gb ram.

Heh, ifixit.com has the entire schematic for tearing out the logic board for the macbook pro. There are 3 exposed cores:

1. The Intel Southbridge
2. The Santa Rosa
3. The Nvidia GPU

All 3 cores are next to each other. The fans are pretty small too so I wonder how the book can hold up to this pseudo-passive cooling. I read that if you are careful, you do not void the warranty. There are no watermarked stickers either. I think the ram will work too. Still waiting for an email back from GSkill just to confirm.

Thanks!

^ Is there even enough room in the macbook pro to add heatsinks to the ram? O_O
