another question: when i make a k-turn (3-point turn), should i signal all three times (left, right and then left again)? or do i only signal two times or none at all?

hey guys~

im going to take my drivers license test next month.
i didnt get any lessons from an instructor, because i ended up getting my permit when i turned 17.

so i was wondering...
what kind of things should i be expected to do during a drivers license test?
a couple of my friends told me to practice k turns and parallel parking. and k turns are like 3-point turns, arent they?

lol-- im kind of nervous about the test, so if anyone can help me prepare for it by telling me what im expected to do, what i shouldnt do and what i should be careful for, thatd be great.

thanks~

I'm not from Jersey, but I'm guessing the test is pretty much the same everywhere and it can't hurt you to do extra practice.

1. A lot of people have been known to fail within the first few seconds by crossing the line next to the stop sign. make sure you stop IN FRONT of the line! Also, make sure you make a complete stop and look both ways before you continue.

2. You have 2 minutes to parallel park, they time you with a stop watch. When you're done, you have to be within 12" of the curb. For this part, just stay calm and concentrate. You can practice in a parking lot using a broom inside a trash can as a "car" or you can practice in your neighborhood (there are always cars parked by the curb and you can just park behind them)

3. There's more than enough space to make a 3-point turn

4. You have to reverse straight back (make sure you look in your rear-view mirror and turn your head to look through the back windshield)

5. Fill out your log book that you got when you passed your permit test!

6. Bring money to pay for your license and enough books, magazines, and/or music to last a few hours at the dmv (for when you're waiting in line..it's always long).

7. Smile in your picture because you will be stuck with it for the next 3 years or so and most of your friends will probably ask to see it and they will laugh at you if you look stupid

Good luck~ smile.gif

I'm from Jersey and the test was really easy.

After the man/woman get in the car greet them and hand them your permit, license and registration, from there man/woman will tell you to start the car but make sure you put your seat belt and check all your mirrors and now you could start your engine. From there man/woman will tell you to go straight or make turn blah blah blah... when you stop at stop sign make sure you look left, right, left and right [3 second] just to make sure and then turn. Remember there is no time limit so you could do it slow. Don't be nervous cuz it will make things lot worse. You do want to practice k turns and parallel parking for sure but it's not too bad... what part of Jersey are you from? Good luck with the test

i took mine last week and basically failed within the first 5 minutes because
for 1. i didnt make a left turn because i was wiating for the car to pass, but my proctor had a problem saying that i couldve turned....(i was trying to be safe but i guess he didn't like it?)
2. this is like the biggest mistake ever i went 35 in residential i think thats where i failed...
i really dont know the reAL reason i failed becasue my prtor didnt give me a score...

by the way i live in s. california
words can't express my disappointment....

I'm like 17 right now and I still don't know how to drive. I got my permit though. It's soo fustrating. Just that my dad is always busy doing stuff for the house, so I have no one else to learn it from. If only my dad let me get started earlier, b/c before he didn't want me to know how to drive until I graduate out of highschool (weird i know). And I'm also kinda scared to drive on the road, what if I crash and stuff. I think it's hard too. I don't get why i'm scared though, even the dumbest kid in school know how to drive (sorry). And I hate how I feel that my friends are kinda thinking that I am a loser b/c I don't know how to drive. Over in my city, all the kids have cars and stuff. But my family can't afford. I wish I was lived in my older city, where not all the kids can afford cars.

i believe you got an automatic fail. you get that when you don't have a score. i heard people always say go 25 in residental, even if 35 is posted speed limit.

i suppose only if they ask? i duno, i didn't have to, but i had to look behind me, over my shoulder, and down at the curb. i think it's an automatic fail if you hit the curb (in cali that is) make sure there's no pedestrians. and when you make turns and stuff, make sure to look all around, left right, then left again. they watch for that, and it bites. literally look over your shoulders, not just peeps, LOOK. i got docked for not lookin and just takin quick peeps

like i said, this is what i had to do. take note, i live in cali

Be keen for unnoticeable things that can make you fail.

For example, if they start you at a stop sign, make sure you are STOPPED. And make sure you get into the correct lane. Sometimes they will put you directly in front of your left lane and you unknowingly will stop, then drive forward not seeing you were supposed to get into your right lane (which coincidentally is out of sight).

Small tricks like that is an automatic fail.

I'm from Jersey as well and my test only lasted about 7 or so minutes, if even. I was only required to pall park, k turn, and reverse. Don't forget to look through all your mirrors! They will be watching to make sure you do so. And always look behind you when you are parking or reversing

Are you in North Jersey? Maybe I can help a little more if we took the test at the same place...

Good luck, btw smile.gif

i'm not in jersey but most tests are the same right?

1) don't go too slow. i drove the exact limit in the residential area & i passed.
2) it's not hard but practice parallel parking. remember to signal backing in & pulling out.
3) make a complete stop, look both sides at least twice.
4) always signal & look at all your mirrors.
5) don't start a conversation, unless of course the dmv person talks first.

hope this helps!

groovyharvy: were you at a 4 way stop waiting to turn left? b/c if that's the case & you stopped before the other car, you have right of way.
& she could hardly breathe without you

well just know how to drive. when i did my test, i just drove to the next kids house and dropped that person off, then switch drivers and such. no parking or other stuff, just normal driving. Just make sure you go the speed limit, dont go below the speed limit either. stop at stop signs, signal when changing lanes, look at mirrors before you change lanes, etc. Just drive normally and you should be fine, and dont be nervous. Good luck

I'm not from NJ either and I didn't take my test yet, but I thought my instructor test said there's no time limit on the test.
Are you really only given 2 minutes to parallel park?

^ My instructor told me told me there isn't exactly a time limit but you should be able to park under three minutes.
Realistically speaking, it's not that hard and if you do it properly it'll take about thirty seconds.

You should be prepared to do all the manoeuvres including 2 point and 3 point turns, parallel parking on hills, angled
parking, reverse stall parking.. My examiner tested me on parking on the side of the roads, parallel, and reverse stall
parking, so be sure to perfect those haha.

And some pointers, remember to always shoulder check when you're turning even if it's unnecessary. When you're
backing up, always do your 360 degree vision check, don't drive too slow, come to a complete stop before the stop
sign or before the line, and check your mirrors every 5-8 second and keep your eyes scanning on the road.

Oh and they might ask you questions about the controls in your car, so be sure to drive a car you're familiar with.

Im from Jersey and i just took my road test like 2 weeks ago and yeah i was soo nervous, but it really really wasnt bad.
I dont know what kinda test youre takin, but i took an open course test. First we parallel parked, as long as you practiced, youll be fine, i practiced the day before and i did fine. After that it really is cake, we made a k-turn and that was it.

So check your mirrors all the time, signal everytime you turn even if it seems unnecessary, put your hand on the back of the passenger seat when you reverse and yeah dont be too nervous!
