I have a problem with some WMV files that I have downloaded. I don't know the technical term for the problem.
Usually a clip if it is okay, allows you to click on the 'ruler' at the time bar to fastforward or go back to a particular location of the whole clip. However, I encounter WMVs with problems that do not allow me to decide where to place the position, it has to play its complete course of the whole clip. This is especially so when I play it on WMP, but when I play on GOM, it seems okay. It is as though the person who did the recording did not 'close the door' by ending the clip properly - if there is such a thing. I tried ASF-Tools to see if I can repair the clip. From a 30MB clip, it became a 10MB clip with plenty of pixelisation. How do I repair the clip to make it whole again.
This problem has been bugging me like hell. I like to be able to manage a clip to where I want it to start or repeat etc.
Hope to hear solutions (hopefully simple ones) to the problem from all of you. Thanks . . .

Basically this shows windows media player is crappy. Seriously thats all it shows. When you use the other player and it works, thats simply because it "knows" to go through the video and flip through it like a book. Windows media player looks at the table of contents and goes OK! But if theres any corruption lets say at 11 seconds the frame is damaged windows media player will get confused and fail. GOM or most others like VLC or media player classic will know to figure out what there and whats playable.
Oh and ASF-Tools takes a brutal path to fixing... its like broken leg? *cut off the leg!*
A better chance is to use Virtual Dub (I think you will need virtual dub mod or mpeg edition) then scan for broken frames and delete those.
With any luck darkviet will come in with a brilliant easy fix for you

Thanks! Awdark for the insight and suggestion.
BTW, I forgot to mention earlier that in WMP the properties of the files show "00:00" as duration of the file. Whereas a regular file would actually show the total length of the clip.

Try this:
1) Download Windows Media Encoder 9 from Microsoft here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsme...er/default.mspx then install it.
2) Go to Start > Programs > Windows Media > Utilities > Run Windows Media File Editor
3) Open your wmv/asf file and go to File > Save As and Index and give it a new name.
Hopefully that'll fix your problem.

I also encountered some problems. There are some videos i can't even edit. When i import them on my editing software it will start but if you also scroll the ruler it will just be blank screen. Let's try some of their suggestions.
What i did with my video file, i converted it to avi using some online video converters. Then i edit and export using adobe for the correct resolution so that i can edit it. There's no audio though. Not recommended. I just did that because i'm desperate to get a clip out of a corrupted wmv video.
