Hey I don't know if anyone has asked this before but...is audacity
the best programme to record?

How do I start?
Say if I wanted to sing a song [a mp3 file]
how do i start off?

I have audacity 1.5..
I downloaded it a while ago but didn't have the time to
record anything..

this is how it looks like when I open the programme..

Reduced: 50% of original size [ 1024 x 483 ] - Click to view full image

now what do I do?

& how do I remove the singer's voice afterwards & save it as mp3 format?

another thing.. is a normal microphone better or one of
those headphones?

where do I plug it?

omg sorry I am so stupid.. but please help..

Audacity sucks. lol but since youre starting out, it'll be more simple for you.

To open a song, you go to File > Open > Pick song > OK
Click record & it should automatically add another track under the song track.. If not, go to one of the menu options(sorry, Im not at home and I cant check).. it should say something like "new track." add that, and you just record.

About removing vocals.. I dont know how to do that on Audacity.. sorry~

To save your files as mp3 format, you have to download LAME. Google it and it should come up. After you download it, you have to move the LAME file into the Audacity program folder. (PM me if you get stuck)

I prefer desktop microphones. =]

LAPTOP:
If youre using a USB mic, there should be a USB plug somewhere on the left or right side of the laptop. It looks like a branch/tree? LOL =x
If youre using the one where theres two plugs, one for your headphones & one for your mic, the plug should be in front on the laptop.. near the speakers.

Regular Computer:
If youre using a USB mic, the plug should be either behind the thing where you turn your computer on.. or at the part where you have to flip the thing open. (Im not sure.. x_x" havent used a regular computer in a while) I guess just find somewhere where it has that branch/tree icon.
If youre using headsets, the plugs are behind the computer. There should be a picture of a mic and headphones.

Okay, gotta go to class. =P
PM me if you need more help.

the real question is whether you want to take the time to actually learn the recording programs out there because the best programs are so much more complicated and the learning curve is very high if you are not familiar with audio recording to begin with. audacity is good because it is basic; plus it's free. Good programs cost around $500-800. and if you are just gonna be singing and mixing that with an instrumental, audacity is enough.

hi, I don't know if this is the place to ask, but what kind of microphone do you guys use? my microphone tends to have really soft sounds when I record and aways have to turn them up really loud to suit the music, which makes it goes funny and makes my voice sound different in high notes (like trying to reach notes that I can't sing or something).
Will a condenser microphone be better or are they to expensive for just fun singing?

I use the MP3 WAV Converter (because all my recordings export as WAVs and Soundclick doesn't like that) but recently all my converted files have these weird 'blipping' sounds... it sounds like static interruptions and it drives me nuts tongue.gif

Any ideas on how to fix this? Or a better converting program?

Is there files available that include the instruments playing, but not the singer's voice? I want to put my voice on it.

just a general pointer...

i know many people who have gotten creative with improving the quality of their sound.

especially when it comes to eliminating pops.

sure you can go buy a pop filter and spend anywhere from 20 to 60 bucks, but if you are using lower end equip, it seems a bit overkill.

for those using dynamic mics, i know people who have put a thin sock over it. its basically like having the foam cover which serves the same purpose.

for those with condensers... ive seen people take a wire hanger and make a circle out of one end, and then stretch some women's stockings over it making a fairly decent albeit ghetto popper stopper.

its kind like in hustle and flow when they stapled cup holders to the wall to soundproof the room.. you just gotta get creative =)

oookay, i know this question has been asked at least 50 times, so i'm sorry to ask again!

when i record myself, i sing with the instrumental in sync, but when i play it, they're not together.
i'm guessing it's because i have a crappy mic lol. it's the one that's on my laptop.. so yeah.

anyway, getting to the point, i was wondering what kind of mic does everyone use, or what mics are recommended?

i dunno if you found your answer yet, but this happens typically when the computer cant handle recording and playback at hte same time.

it may be an old processor issue, a ram issue, a sound card issue... basically somewhere along the line your computer doesnt have enough power or resources to perform the task with zero latency (delay).

the only other issue i can think of is if you are using a usb mic... so if you are using a usb mic with a 1.1 port instead of the newer/faster 2.0 ports, you may have some problems. OR the usb mic may just be crappy overall.

but i'm willing to bet its a computer issue the only thing that iwll fix it will be to upgrade some parts.

I think it depends on what you're recording. If you're going to record yourself singing, I don't think it's good because it can be too close to your mouth so there can be popping noises, etc. I used to have one and the quality was fine but it wasn't meant to record singing.

^ I use Audacity.

Some people use Adobe Audition, and others use other programs.

Most people start off using Audacity because it's free smile.gif
