ah there in lies the problem
i knew it was something like that
usb mics can't monitor recording, unless the recording program you use has software monitoring. i'm pretty sure audacity and alot of the other lower recording software doesn't have software monitoring. I know apple logic pro 8 does not too sure about cubase/protools and the others, but it has a lag that makes it useless.
the reason for this is that when your mic is plugged directly into the soundcard, everything is done within the soundcard, the mic input goes straight to the sound output. if you use anything connected through usb, it has to go through the computer then to the sound output, which gives you a lag. trust me, with the lag it'll only make you sound worse, because it's really hard to stay on pitch and time. the reason XLR mics can monitor is because either your preamp has direct monitoring, or your audio interface/soundcard has direct monitoring. normal input mics have direct monitoring cause it goes through your normal soundcard/audio interface.
if you want monitoring you'll need to get a mic that plugs directly into your soundcard, like a normal computer mic, or an actual recording mic that goes through a preamp.
o_o. thats why i had to upgrade from the samson co1u. its usb so it can't monitor. a few usb mics now have a built in monitor thing, like the samson G-track.
I also noobishly mix. So if you need someone to mix, i'll be happy to help out.
Sorry bout that pic guys... someone went onto my account... and put that there...

check out 'behind these hazel eyes' by kelly clarkson. a lot of the chorus is belting, and the word 'anymore' at the end of the bridge is an amazing, really high belt.
also, check out 'oh holy night' by jang ri in, the highest note in the song is a belt. it's in the word 'divine' the second last time she sings it.
Christina aguilera also belts a lot of notes.
To belt, you basically almost scream the note but it sounds more like singing and it's not really forced. I say don't worry about belting until you've worked on other parts of your singing and you ask a singing coach/teacher if you're doing it properly.
the most important exercise I would recommend for you is to sing scales. Over, and over, and over again.
Buying a vocalise/vocal exercise book is a really good investment too.
to improve your range you just have to practice. keep singing a do-re-mi-re-do pattern and start on a higher note each time (by a semitone) and most of all, relax. if you're tense you won't be able to sing the notes.
better control also comes with practice.
if anyone has any contradictions, feel free to post them. thats just what i know (which isnt very much xD)

(Big fan of you ^^)
Bridge - is the area where you would flip into your next register, middle register - high register / chest voice - mixed/head voice
flip - transitioning through the bridge

it depends on how high you mean. care to give an example?
if its around C-E above middle C, then it's probably a belt. they're very powerful.

some ppl just sing well naturally and some ppl just cant
tats wut i think
but if u want to become better, then try this:
dont try to "choose" when u want to sing, just do it if u feel like it
it doesnt matter if u suck or not, the feelings more important
if its a happy song then sing happily
if its like a song about a guy cheating on a girl and shes depressed, then just pretend ur tat girl
i hope this helps

Can anyone explain to me what is singing scales? Or show me a link on how to do this exercise? And another question is, a lot of people mention about singing from your diaphragm so does this mean you will never experience tension in your neck even when hitting high notes?
Thanks.

this has been edited....
but singing--
does your nose vibrate?
when you sing, touch your nose. are you suppose to feel a little bit of vibration? Or no???
I had a book on singing...but it's lost. >_<

^ here are some scales.
well, if the notes are within your comfortable range, then you should not experience tension. but if theyre too high for you they might not be completely easy to sing.

I also have a question; why is it that sometimes I try to sing a high note (around A 2 octaves above middle C and higher) and for a few seconds no noise comes out of my throat? Am I not using proper technique?

a Vibratto is like, natural? you dont need to force it but it comes out naturally?
well idk ive always wanted to become a singer and I am like, trying to copy my favorite singers...
THey all have an awesome vibratto and I try to get it by actually trying to get a vibratto...
is this the wrong way to think?
i read that forcing it is bad and it should just comes out naturally...

It's not normal when you're ALWAYS straining your vocal chords. There are some special techniques to get rid of that. If your having difficulties then your using TOO MANY muscles trying to help out. So.....
Start on a comfortable note and sing "la, la, la" up the scale until you get just past the limit of "comfortable" and then return down the scale. Now place the flat of your thumb under your chin and press upward VERY slightly. Sing the same scale again and chances are, you'll feel the muscles under your chin start to press your thumb downward. These muscles are NOT needed for singing, and in fact they only add to your strain. This time go up the scale and try to consciously keep those muscles from pressing against your thumb.
:] Keep on singing!
