Hey guys/girls.. few questions thats been pondering my brain.

For those of you who signed up, what kinda school did you go to? University or State? (UCLA as compared to Cal Poly Pomona).
What was your GPA?
Did most of you sign up directly with the school attending or your school?

thanks much!

I came from a State college (San Diego State Univ) and applied via the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) and not through State's own International Programs.

My GPA is bad (engineering it tough tongue.gif) Hahaha minimum is 3.0 but they let me slide in with a 2.7 smile.gif

You sign up with your study abroad coordinator who then forwards everything required to your host institution.

so i read this whole thread and i noticed that most of the people who attended were situated in the international dorms.

does anyone know how much an apartment will cost? just a small apartment fit for one or two people with a bathroom, kitchen, a clothes washer and a dryer.. tongue.gif because dorming is really not for me, and i might go with my sister.

if anyone knows a website for apartment listings near yonsei university, please help me out!

thank you

ahhh. regarding the whole korean-american response to non-koreans i was pretty surprised at their attitude. i've grown up around koreans my whole life seeing as my city is literally 90% korean, (all the people in CA will know what i mean when i say cerritos. lol.) and i've gotten along with them just fine. being indian, most of my friends are korean, including my two best friends. i personally don't get a long with indian people and have pretty much grown up my whole life here mixing with korean-americans. i'm thinking either the generations have gotten nicer, or it might be the way you approach them, or their comfortability level with you if they generally mix w. korean people. :}

i was actually considering studying abroad in Korea, but after hearing all this, I'm starting to think it'd be easier for me to explore as an English teacher there.

I know that some colleges actually help you find a place outside of the college. I forgot which ones but you should ask the college you are going to. I might be doing the same thing, my friend and I might be going there for hip hop dancing (well plust college for me lol, so it would be better get an apartment because of (1) no curfew lol, (2) we might end up living in Korea for a couple years, (3) my brother might be an exchange student for high school and if his homestay will let him stay with me on the weekends, that would be great.

But i'd read that some colleges help students if they don't want to stay in dorms.....best advice is to a counsler there or read up on housing on your college's website.

A good thing to do is to go on youtube.com and type in Korea apartments, and it shows you what the apartments there look like. Then you can ask the user how much they pay a month. There was one apartment that was absolute HEAVEN for only $370 dollars a month, but it was in Pusan lol...he said that in Seoul, prices are about 10%-25% more than in Pusan.

if you don't want to dorm i'd suggest staying at a guesthouse.
an apartment in seoul is going to be expensive, and they probably won't rent to someone only staying a month or so and who isn't a korean citizen...

i will have finished freshman year btw..

my experience with yonsei's summer program

i went through younsei's summer session (DIEE) in 2003 & 2004.

in 2003, the ppl in the dorm were terrible. 90%+ of the kids there were korean-americans, and many of them were visibly NOT happy about having non-koreans in their midst.
i got ppl saying stuff like "what are YOU doing here?" as if i had no right to go to korea to learn korean.

most the korean-americans hung out together and actively excluded anyone that was not korean-american or 1/2 korean.

many...most of them had sh*tty korean, and would try to make up for it by mumbling and swearing a lot in korean.

the teachers were nice and the security guards also were nice.
actually, i had more fun with the koreans (locals) than korean-americans.

in 2004 when i went, it was much better (but still not great).
the summer session is really about "korean-american bonding time". and because of that, i ACTIVELY encourage NON-KOREANS to apply for the summer session.

of course both times i went i met nice korean-americans, but a lot of them are just rude to non-koreans (this includes non-korean asian-americans).

anyways, this 2nd time i went, there were more non-koreans and some of us were able to hang out.

in terms of classes:
mon, tues, thurs & fri you have class. wed is a no-class day...for some random reason...
the korean language class is 3 hrs long. the 1st hr is like reading, 2nd is grammar, 3rd is speaking (something like that) with a 10 min break between each hour. and it's everyday (except wed of course).

you don't *have* to take a korean class, they have a number of other classes avaliable, all taught in english. though, be warned that some teachers of the other non-korean lang classes don't have the best english (so i heard) so, you'll have to put a bit more effort into learning.

if you're going to take a korean class, they give you a placement exam.
they tell you that the exam places you lower than what you might have expected. but, you can always move up or down as you please.

the exam starts out with some simple stuff then gets harder and harder.
in my case, there were grammar patterns that i knew, but i didn't know the vocab around the grammar so i couldn't understand what was going on.
there's also a speaking portion.
basically the lady is going to ask you stuff like "what's your name?" "where are you from?" "what time did you wake up this morning?" etc.
honestly, i didn't know the answers so some questions even in english cuz i just straight up forgot.

if you are a complete beginner, they have a beginner class.
it sounds like the class starts off in english, but then the teachers just switch mostly to korean...and some ppl felt that they didn't really learn anything.

some korean-americans might have good/OK speaking skills, but can't write worth sh*t.
if that's you, and you're put in a lower class, don't get an attitude about it.
it's no fun to be in a class with ppl who don't want to be there.
it's not my fault that you didn't want to take saturday korean lang classes as a kid, so don't get an attitude with non-koreans who know more about korean grammar than you.
along with that, if you are a non-korean taking korean, the korean teachers expect you to know the grammar better than korean-american students...and sometimes explicitly tell the class that.

so if that's you, non-korean person, try to work on your speaking skills!

there's a buddy program in the summer and during the regular year.
i never did it, but it could be a good way to meet local koreans, and many local koreans are eagar to show non-koreans (and korean-americans) around and introduce them to korean culture.

i'll write more later...i'm getting tired.

Wow I had no ideal

How about non Koreans? Did they seem to have fun?

alot of my friends (fob wannabes)
wanna study abroad in Korea...
which I find extremely strange
unless they want to major in that language(err i mean master)
or something entitles them to learn in Korea...
but for the most part, America = education land of success.

Hey you guys,

I studied abroad in South Korea in Suwon, South Korea back in the summer of 2006. I was reading my previous posts in this thread about being worried about money and cultural differences. To tell you the truth, it wasn't too much of a problem. Studying in abroad in South Korea was the best time of my life.

I don't want to sound like an ad for Ajou University's International Summer Session but I'll share some experiences I had at Ajou.
    - Free 3-day field trip to:
Gyeongju (Korea's old ancient capital, lots of beautiful temples and tombs)
    Cheonan (Independence Hall)
Busan (Haeundae beach, fish markets, Busan Tower, Stay at Arpina Hostel
    - Truly international participants from all over the world
    - Regular Ajou Students will be attended classes as well (10 or so)
    - Beautiful Campus, very green
    - Every Wednesday there is a Korean Cultural class where you take part in Korean activities or field trips (Suwon Traditional Village, Korean Museum, Nanta performance, Pottery making, Taekwondo, etc)
I loved how Ajou's summer program was all made of international students and not only Korean Americans. You get the best of both words: gain Korean friends and international friends. I had a friend who went to Yonsei for their KLI, and he told me 80% of their participants were Korean American. He was the only Indian guy there. I will miss the jjimjilbang's (korean sauna houses), noraebangs, clubbing at Kangnam and Hongdae areas, shopping in the crowded Myeongdong district, chompin on Lotteria's Frico Cheese burgers, and drinking soju in the dorms smile.gif I got to visit the infamous DMZ border and Panmunjeom. If you want to hear more about my experiences, I've blogged some of it on my xanga link down in my signature.
If you are thinking about studying abroad in Korea, DO IT!! It is worth every $$$. I am not Korean and I had the best time of my life. I even attended a Filipino language church in Hyewha! The Korean people were very nice even for a hefty guy like myself. It is relatively safe at night and drinking is the norm! The only major problem is that during the summer is Korea's heaviest rainy season. So most of the times we just spent the time indoors at noraebangs or pc bangs (I still can't believe they have a gaming viewing channel studio in CO-EX Mall!?!?!).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiFJ2D9IxRg
This is a video that the Ajou ISS made for all of us during our time in Korea.

Thanks for reading!! Kamsahamnida!

I just got my admissions letter last week and I got into the Yonsei program (for the academic year.) There's so much paperwork involved though~ wink.gif But I guess it's a small price to pay to go study in Korea, hehe.

I think I'm going to stay in the dorms for the first semester, maybe even the second.. is anyone else going to Yonsei and staying the dorms?? There's a position where you can request a specific roommate and I thought it might be fun to room with a fellow Soompier smile.gif PM me if you wanna room~!!
