I really, really, really hate all the phones that you can buy in Canada
and I really, really, really want a phone from Asia.

Why can't Rogers or Fido or something just sell the same phones as Asia does?!

Sad.

What we need here is a new cell phone company that makes amazingly sexy phones.

lol. agreed. i posted a thread exactly like this months ago.

i think they dont get the types of phones they get in asia cuz of cost/benefit factor and lower demand for such things (lower population overall too?). i guess the only way is to get a imported phone from a 3rd party. rolleyes.gif

i also heard that the can government is opening another frequency or something for another provider (maybe shaw???) to compete in the mobile biz...but i think thats just a rumour. you can do a search for more details about this.

The reason why is because their cell phone technology is just more advance and the country is smaller. At least S. Korea and Japan is, along with other Asian countries besides China, Russia, and etc; the bigger countries. America is in the same boat, but recently CDMA providers are offering, or soon to be, good phones. Not as cool, but good. Blame the consumers that want free phone, because of that, providers sell cheap phones. Also, Europe is more advance. Most of the unlocked phones are made for the European providers, but also can be used anywhere that uses the same frequencies.

Just buy an unlocked phone and use it with your carrier. You can read the FAQ if you want to learn more.

what i hate are the phone plans. they're so expensive compared to the ones in hk and us (so i heard). I really don't care for the latest phone.... but i would like to be able to make my own ringtones. I don't care for western music.
at least fido/rogers lets u use sim cards. I have bell.... can't switch phones easily.

Get a free phone from Fido or Rogers for a 3 year plan, it used to be 2 years, and then get a GSM unlocked phone. Save your free phone for a rainy day or sell it on craigslist like most people. There are places in Chinatown or Koreatown that carries cell phonesfrom Asia, but they are overpriced most of the time but it's worth it to check them out. I like online sites better or sometimes you'll find local not-a-store dealers from craigslits or something.

I agree that the plans are expensive here. For the same price you can get a lot more in Asian countries.

Contracts are terrible, more often than not, you're paying an arm and a leg just to get a "cheaper" mobile when you can shop around and save yourself the money.

Don't expect to check your email or anything ota related on your phone, Rogers and any of the other wireless carriers will not offer cheap data plans any time soon. Hence the iPhone (or anything close to it) not being officially sold.

Blackberry's on the other hand are "aimed" to those that can actually afford the ridiculous per KB charges.

^how expensive are the unlocked phones at p-mall? Im planning to buy one there since my rogers phone is ready to die any minute now =(

I dont like the contracts here in canada too...I used to have a contract with rogers when i first bought my phone, and they billed me too expensive. Some of expenses I dont even I understand. When I asked them to explain my bill, they just mumbled and stuff. So I switched to rogers pre-paid instead. Im not tied to contracts anymore, but it's costly sometimes when I use my phone for internet. XD

I think it might be cheaper if you get them online.. the price depends on what phone you want.
