Uhmm, I'm a senior and I'm not sure what I want my major to be...

Does applying undecided matter?
If so/if not, in which schools do they matter more?

Based on these schools.

UC's
NYU
BU
Northwestern
USC
(yeah I'm still in the process of picking schools =_=)

Thanks ^^

Thanks for clearing everything up for me~ happy.gif

Okay, I'm a senior at high school so don't take my word for this, but isn't college about finding your passion in life? I know that sounds really cheesy but not everyone can be expected to know what they want to do by the end of high school. That's a huge step to take and it can change your life.

Plus, I've been told by colleges that it's okay if you don't know what your major is and that there are plenty of students who don't figure out their major until even sophomore or junior year. =/

yeah, when you put undecided you have a bigger chance of getting in. if you pick a specific major, you're in competition with specific people to get into that major. so if you want a specific major and you don't get in... then that's it. but i think that sometimes if you decide a major later on, you might not get into it because there might already be too many people in it at your school or something.

sometimes it helps to apply undecided because some majors are capped, meaning they can only take a limited number of students who apply for it. so once you get in the college, you can declare your major later.

being undecided your first year won't be bad at all just because there are a million pre-reqs you are required to take anyways that doesn't go towards your major, just towards graduation requirements.

At my school, we had a college student come in when it was National Junior Honor Society day or something..
and she said a lot of colleges tend to like students who go to college with an undecided major. (:

i need some advice on this subject too. i'm definately going undecided for the first year in college and then figuring out what i want to be but i wanted to know if it was better for me to start at a community, state, or univeristy first? i thought OF COURSE EVERYBODY SAYS UNIVERSITIES ARE GREAT, but then i thought that i was just wasting money going to a huge school when i could just declare undecided in a community and then transfer when i figure things out. BUT im not sure if i can just go to a state and then transfer as well. and i was wondering if i could have just taken one year in a community and then transfer to a university, i dont want to waste two years. PLUS its so much easier to get into a community college than a university and the university would most likely accept you if your from a community than a regular high school right? CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP. IT WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER KNOWING SO I CAN APPLY TO THE RIGHT SCHOOLS. THANKS SO MUCH biggrin.gif

most schools do not require you to declare majors until the end of your sophomore year/beginning of junior year. so you'll have plenty of time to decide what you want. also, when you select a major on your application, you're not committing yourself to that major. you're just showing the school that you're interested in that field of study. picking certain majors can be advantageous in getting in - for example, if you're a female and you pick a major that's dominated by males, there's a more likely chance that you'll get accepted into that school than if you were to apply undecided, since the school wants to ensure variety in their majors. also, if you declare "undecided" even though your app and ECs show an obvious interest (for example, you're president of the science club and won intel, etc), then obviously they know you're going to pick a science track.

ramenkid - you can always transfer to another college after your freshman year. there are no differences in state vs. universities - all state colleges are universities (unless they're LACs, which i don't think any are) so there isn't really any difference in terms of the "level" of college between those two. some state schools are great colleges - umich, unc-chapel hill, university of illinois-urbana champaign, etc. also, i doubt that a school would be more willing to accept you if you went to a community college. if i were you, i'd just apply to an actual university or college. most colleges encourage you to go in undecided that you can explore and figure out what you want to major in.
