Article excerpt:Korean singer Jyongri kicks off her career with a debut album and lots of passion.
By Chris Betros

When she was 8 years old, Jyongri saw the movie “Sister Act 2” and it had a profound influence on her. “I loved its enthusiasm. I’ve seen it countless times. It doesn’t have a deep meaning but it had so much power,” said the 18-year-old third-generation Korean whose debut album, “Close to Fantasy,” will be released in Japan on March 21.

Soul/pop would best describe Jyongri’s debut album. “Actually, I’m still looking for a style,” she says. “I am really eclectic. I like all genres from many time periods. I do want to make my own genre one day. For the album, I wrote all the music and lyrics. Sometimes it starts off as personal influences; then my imagination takes over. When I am writing music, it feels like time has stopped.”

Jyongri has already been getting quite a bit of exposure. A single from the album, “Hop, Step, Jump,” was released in February and got a lot of radio time. She has been in magazines and some of her songs have been played as themes for TV shows. “I am really excited about my first album, and I am a little nervous because I know there will be people who don’t like my music. But that’s the sort of thing I have to be ready for. I get a lot of positive comments from fans in emails, some from little girls and also from people my parents’ age, saying how my music feels nostalgic to them.”

Jyongri says her biggest challenge these days is time management. “When I have school, I don’t like taking the first period. It’s torture. It may be a 15-hour day by the time I get back home. Then I have to do my laundry, do the dishes, homework and prepare for the next day. It requires a lot of self-discipline,” she says. And what do her parents think of her music? “They are really proud and supportive of me, but sometimes they don’t know how to react to some of my lyrics because I talk a lot about love. I guess it’s awkward to hear your daughter talking about falling in love and breaking up.”

When she is not studying or recording, Jyongri likes to hang out with her friends and says she loves to eat. “You could almost call it a hobby,” she laughs. “It’s only recently that I have started to think about keeping in shape, since I have to perform in front of people.” Her cheerful demeanor reflects her motto: “Don’t worry, be happy.” “When you feel that something is boring or dull, look for a tiny thing that you like and concentrate on that,” she advises. “When I get into a slump, I don’t try and dig myself out. I give it time because I know the creative feeling will come back.”
