But I remember someone once said "Do you know why the interior of the Volkswagon is nice and comfy? It's because you can get comfortable while waiting for the tow truck" hahaha

The most expensive would probably either be the Touareg fully loaded with the V10 or the 3.6 Passat which would easily run into the High 40's and Low 50's (I make myself sound like i'm telling the forecast
Is there any of the models that you like in particular?
There are the Rabbit's, Gti's, Jetta's, Passat's, Touareg's, Beetle's, and R32's
Good luck with your choice

the biggest one is, I lost fifth gear in my transmission once, but this was due to my poor maintenance and 5th gear will always go if you have low fluid in your tranny. (i found a tranny for 300 bucks and replaced it before cracking open the other trans)
warped rotors, that's typical, my car has almost 90k miles and i've never changed them once...
My tensioner pulley exploded on me once, which was like 70 bucks plus a 20 dollar belt.
my mass air flow sensor went bad on me once, got a new one for around 70 bucks
02 sensor went bad on me, but those were changed under warranty and i haven't had a problem since.
one hydrolic arm on my glove box broke, but can easily be taken a apart and be repaired.
had a caliper lock up on me once, but i think i must of tore the boot on it at one point of time, i just don't know when but it was turn when i saw it.
i currently have no abs because i was careless and broke one of my abs sensors, which isn't a big deal, but i just haven't gotten around to purchasing another one
my clutch started slipping at 80k, somehow oil got in there and ruined it, so I replaced it with a 400 dollar clutch (because i needed a grippier clutch for the power i was going to do), but the stock clutch is only like 100 bucks...
that's pretty much all the problems i've had... i don't consider those problems anything to massive... my sisters chevy malibu which has 90k on it, spun a bearing... how the heck it did that, when the vehicle has been maintained fine, i'll never no. I've also heard nothing but good on the newest generation of VW's also. So in my opinion I'd say go for it.
oh, my jetta is a 2000 by the way
oh also, the r32's are DSG man, those things are amazing. I personally wouldn't want a DSG, but it'd be an awesome track car! The car sounds so good too! (i test drove one for fun)

a lot of those are mostly maintenance issues, not really problems with the vehicle itself.

I agree after reading the list of things that went wrong (more likely worn out), and comparing it to my 117k mile Miata, most of it is maintenance stuff. Auto manufacturer's develop their cars with planned obsolescence. Some of these parts are better quality than others thats all.
Think about it... you cant drive the car forever, something is bound to break. Anything over 80k miles your going to have to change out/if not all ready done:
timing belt
water pump
fuel filter
air filters
oil filters
transmission fluid
diff fluid
tires
going to have to change out bulbs
spark plugs
battery
spark plug wires
all hoses
etc.etc.etc.
If you buy a used car, you have to attach another 1-2k extra for maintenance stuff.
