Standardized test definitely do not define you as a student.
Some people could be bad at taking tests but can do well in other aspects, and vice versa.

i think it KINDA does, but the result doesn't show it

for example, just because you can't read the SAT passages quickly and get everything right doesn't mean you can't read. in college hopefully you're not gonna cram or write an essay 25 minutes before it's due, right? if given more time, maybe you'll score as well as the stupid person that randomly guessed everything and miraculously got everything right. but the scores don't show that. seriously, the SAT is an aptitude test, which means it's actually designed to predict how well you're going to do in college. crazy.

also, you might get low scores cuz you're clumsy. like me, i tend to get the right answer but fill in the wrong bubble. or some other dumb mistakes. not cuz i don't know how to do something. your little flaws lower the score (which is why i said it kinda does define you), but in the end the scores seem to judge only intelligence (so it doesn't really).

personally i'd say no, but the college process is basically a contest of who looks better on paper, and those scores do matter a lot.......so i'd say the system defines me based on my test scores, even though i myself dont

No. A student can learn test-tasking strategies and practice them over time, but it doesn't define a student's worth ethic.

No, it doesn't. I think I'm a good student, but when it comes to test like these, I don't do so well.
These tests only test your intelligence as well.

Not being mean! But I know people who are smarter than others and can't score as well on the SAT's.
But then, all the smart kids do well on it, so I guess it can only define you to a certain limit.

For me it does, but I know for others it doesn't
But even then it only gives a small portion of the picture.

never for the sat.

my experiences in the test only show that it only shows whether you're a good test taker or not. unfortunately, most colleges have to use the sat as a factor to admitting students b/c of the possible variations in gpa (i.e. a high gpa in a bad school could be a low gpa in a really good school), which i understand, because it can be difficult to pick who to admit.

i don't believe the sat should be a big priority because you waste so much time mastering a test made by collegeboard, which for some schools, is a unfortunate factor to college admissions. life shouldn't be about just this one simple test because there are so many other ways to demonstrate your qualities, talents and passions other than one test. unfortunately, we have to make it a big factor. its sad

yes

it's accurate in terms of putting you in context with the rest of the US. there needs to be some method of standardization, and we all know schools give out As with varying generosity.

^^ but how does that define a person as a student, as my ib bio teacher stated, when he's grading IB exams/Ap Exams, he's not grading papers but actual kids. It's pretty scary that one little test can have so much effect on your future, with everyone person theres an underlying situation, therefore no test can really "define" you as a student, it can't tell you what your study habits are, if you're going to be successful in college, or anything else, at most it can tell you what you measure up to when it comes to answering questions versus the rest of the nation.

Although the test itself may not wholly define you as a student, I believe that the SAT is still effective and does reflect to a degree the type of student you are. So when asked this type of question I usually have both a yes and no answer. Basically..

YES because:
- Most people who do well on the test study. So people with good study habits can usually get a good grade.
- It is an objective way of comparing a large number of students. If you run a college, how else are you going to judge students? GPA is okay, but some courses may be easier than others, so it's hard to tell for sure. If it's standardized, everyone is graded on the same scale.
- People who do well must have the knowledge required to answer the questions correctly. Someone who does not learn at all could not score well on the test.

NO because:
- Some people are not good test-takers, so they cannot score well even if they are intelligent.
- Some people who do not do anything in terms of studying, etc. will score well.
