So ... I think I jacked up my car today ...

I was driving ... and I guess I accidentally hit it to neutral then over-reved ...

Then in my panic, I shifted back to Drive. I'm not sure if my foot was on the accelerator or not.

And basically, my car can barely make it up a hill. I have to pretty much floor it to gain speed after stopping ...

And I'm leaking a crapload of oil coming from the filter (I guess it somehow became unloose)

Anyways, my friend's dad thinks it's my timing belt or broken valve (I hope it isn't). My grandpa thinks it's transmission, which I thought at first, but that would mean I wouldn't be able to shift at all right?

Man ... I made such a stupid mistake ... sleep.gif

I am thinking bent valve. Ayaaaaaaa I did this to my car too, but thank goodness she's fine. Basically I was in 4th around 4k RPMS and then wanted to shift into 3rd, but I shifted into 2nd by accident. The needle almost tore off.

SLAMMED MY clutch and then just went on as ususal.... was trying to catch up to a GTI sleep.gif

There is another test... not a compression test, but another one to see if all the cyls are firing n what not.... i'll get back to you on that one, if it fails the test... need new valves.

Anyway, better start saving.

There was a similar situation where this guy was racing an suv and the guy tried to shift from 5th gear to 3rd but it slipped into neutral.

It is a compression test that he needs. If a busted valve was the problem, the compression in that cylinder would register as zero because the air in the cylinder would leak out through the busted valve when the test is performed. Busted valve as in the piston collided with the valve chipping it or causing it to bend or crack off. If it is the head's gotta come off for repair.

It is not your timing belt, because even if it jumped a cog or two it would still drive. If it broke, and you happen to have a interference engine, your many of the valves if not all will be busted, hence you cannot drive the car.

Have you noticed any lights coming on at the dash after that occured, such as oil pressure, check engine, etc?

Was the car stumbling (misfiring?) as you drove it up the hill? It seems unlikely, but the other test you can run, as Laxntiga, would be to remove the spark plug wires (if your car uses wires) or the spark plug coil and hold it near the engine block (plugged in) and crank the car, you should see sparks fly.

BTW, it would be helpful to tell us what kind of vehicle you drive.

I doubt it is a transmission problem.

How did you accidently confuse 2nd for 3rd when the positions are completely opposite?

I drive a 97 Toyota Camry XLE ...

The Check Engine light comes on and when I accelerates it starts blinking ...

And the Oil light flashed really quickly on and off when I got home ... I noticed that I had a trail of oil behind my car. sleep.gif

Ok, you must get the codes pulled. Odds are those were misfire codes... Autozone may or maynot carry the loanable OBDII reader to read this car, because I noticed some don't carry the one to read the ISO9141 OBDII standard. It is important to know what the codes are as they could indicate anything from failed ignition coils (I don't think your car uses spark plug wires) and or fuel injection related issues.

Secondly, top off your oil level now, if that oil light comes on again and stays on while you are driving or just after starting the car, damage can occur immediately, due to low oil pressure. Also tighten that filter or just replace it. you do not want to be a victim of low oil pressure...

My mistake, I was in 5th, trying to go to 4th, but hit 2nd.

Made lots of noise sleep.gif

If I didn't bend the valves, I sure did clean up a lot of carbon build up =)

I just got my enthusiast manual for the miata in the mail. I just realized how much work there really is to do a clutch job. Freaking like 10 pages worth of instructions with 1/2 pictures, gawd.

Blinking check engine light? That's a catalyst damaging misfire. You shouldn't drive your car very much until you get it repaired. Your vehicle might also be in limp mode. You probably floated a valve, depending on how high you revved it.

my ex's friend drove on freeway, he sometimes switched to neutral. He did it for fun, stupid him.
After he did that, the car barely made up a hill too, the car even didn't want to move when he put it in reverse.

The repair shop said the transmission was totally dead, he had to pay at least $4K for a new one.

Well, got my car towed to the dealer yesterday ...

Trying to get the dealer to fix it for free since I only bought it three weeks ago.

Hope it works. sleep.gif

Make sure you didn't sign any papers stating "as-is". If that is the case, you will be charged for the repairs.

Just curious, were u resting ur hand on the shifter when you accidently shifted the gears?

majority of dealers sell used cars "as-is"...repairing transmissions aren't cheap especially automatics.
