$1200 is going to get you a decent laptop for what you're looking for. First of all, you need to consider the size of the laptop you want. 15.4" is the standard, you can go up or down depending on your usage. 17" would be more for a desktop replacement, and smaller ones would be more ideal to carry around for school/work and what not. If your kinda budget, I'd pick up a laptop with a Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 gigs of ram for starters. If you were wanting a tablet pc, the price does jump a bit so you should consider whether you need it before you go for it. smile.gif Hope this helps

Get whichever series you want for a laptop. From what your requirements are, just get a good processor, 2 GB of ram, and choose the amount of space you need on the hard drive. DEEM(above me) has mentioned the processor you need, I would recommend a 2.0+ Ghz processor. There are coupons floating around in notebook forums(just google it).

Right now, there are a lot of pretty good deals thats under your budget and meet your needs at slickdeals.net, go check it out.

2.0+ghz? For what, especially on a laptop.

I wouldn't do that. Once the GHz goes beyond 1.83GHz... the price goes up A LOT. Unless things have changed over that past year or two. It's not worth it. 1.83ghz should be enough. I have a 1.83ghz core duo (not core 2 duo) and it's fast enough for me. And I actually game on it. FEAR, DOOM3, CSS, WOW, and SC and with all smooth framerates.

I do have a 3.0ghz core 2 duo desktop and it's freakishly fast. LOLz.\

edit: oh and the 1.83ghz laptop i have has GMA950 integrated graphics which requires A LOT of cpu power for good graphics. Just in case you were gonna say "well it depends on what graphics card you have" regarding the games with smooth framerates.

Uh...what?
1.83GHz Dual-core processors and 2.00GHz dual-core processors are only $50~100 apart from each other, depending on the manufacturers.
Also for the gaming, "good graphics" is still mainly based on the graphic card itself because it is the central component doing all the processing for onboard rendering. If you have a decent central processing unit, it's going to be all about the card.
Ie. 3.00GHz dual-core processor + integrated graphic card will never be as good as 2.00GHz dual-core processor with GeForce 8600M GT GDDR3.
Quite skeptical on how you're running above games with "smooth framerates", unless they're all set at low.

PS. To the OP, I agree with DKYang.

to s2_sOr_mUi ^, if your having problems with your cam, you probably just need to grab some drivers off the HP site.

And I agree with pxd, it doesn't matter how powerful your processor is if you have a graphics card that's holding you back, the CPU doesn't necessarily replace the power that the gfx card provides. And like he said, the price between a 1.8~2.0ghz processor is not a huge jump. And the OP said that they don't need good graphics, so onboard would probably do the trick. I'd just get the best processor your budget can take. Possibly a C2D T7100 ?

The 2.00 is not that much more if it's only 2mb cache. But if you get like the 4mb cache one, then the price difference is a tad higher. Performance wise, I doubt there is much difference from 1.83 and 2.0ghz on a laptop, since they both probably not even gonna run at peak. The multiplier is probably gonna fluctuate anyways depending on the load of the system.

I agree with pxd in regards to the graphics and gaming.

The hp with the 8400 graphics cards are plenty fast. If you plan to carry it around get like a 14 inch one so it would be about 5lbs.
as for processors go for any, amd intel doesn't matter. Dual corre is good avoid celeron.. Otherwise I doubt you can telll the sped diference between them. seriously.. Sure I can benchmark 5% faster who cares better batery l0ife when its slower you know. Heck hallf the time I run my
aptop at half its noormal speed. 800mhz and its just fine sometimes I kick it up to convert otherwise I leave it slow.. Cant feel it 90% of the time. And I have a dv2000t.

I have a dv2000. It is soooo prettttyy and functional too! I love that it is 14.1" cause the screen is not too big and not too small. I wanted to keep my lappy light because i was planning on carrying it around campus...so if you need something light and portable, def. look at dv2000. I like it alot.
