Hello!
I'm doing my first college essay and the topic is about education. My thesis statement is "I agree that parents give unlimited support to their children on education." (it's just my rough draft for a thesis but you get the message, right?" My teacher told us to get evidence with personal experience and other experience from friends so i'm coming here for your help Big Smile [biggrin.gif]. How does your parents feel about your education? Do they support it? If so how? Parents can also answer Big Smile [biggrin.gif] I want to see your opinions. I'll try my best to transition it on to my essay. Please make your answer atleast a paragraph long (6-7 sentences).

Most of you think that all parents support education. It may seem like an easy topic but if you look at different point of view of a parent who came from a low class family and never got an education may not support their child education. They are scared of loosing there child from becoming a person who looses "roots" from their commuity and loosing their "valus" and letting it all go for something better. No one said that you can't keep your values and roots but just remeber coming from a low class family have different opinions.

sorry if my explanation is horriable! i was never a good writer... >.<

I think you did fine in the post. My parents are pretty fine with my education and they support me by paying for everything and whatnot. One thing I like about my parents is they just care that I'm doing fine and keeping on with everything and they aren't the type of parents who want me to do something worthwhile but as long as I have a career and all. smile.gif

My education contributes to my parents' trust in me. They didn't have the opportunity to go to school, so they want us to go for the good of ourselves. They definitely support me and leave it up to me when it comes to my education, although they'll let me know what's on their mind for my part in consideration.*But they truly trust me and has given me the opportunities they never had. I was the first female to go away for college in my family, and having my parents be Asian and old-traditioned, it's a really big progression they've made by having confidence and understanding for me. They try to help me financially, but most of all, they give me their trust and compassion-- and that's the best support i'll ever need from them. smile.gif
Good luck w/ your essay!! wink.gif

your essay topic's like one of my fav types .. elaborating on personal experiences ..
I guess my parents had a lot of hopes on me since my brother did very well in school and has a good job ..
My Mum was the main 'pusher' thru'out my schooling .. She did was a top student in high school but did not attend college due to her family's financial prob .. so she really hoped all of us would have at least a degree to fall back on .. she was even asking me about graduate school when i first enrolled in my degree prog last yr.. that's madness .. i'm thankful that she allowed me to choose a course i like ..
you can say the traditional asian family does value education a lot .. especially in times on poverty, the parents want the kids to do even better to get out of the cycle.. one example i know of would be about a few of my classmates from myanmar and china .. their parents borrowed money just to send the kids to a school abroad .. imagine all the financial burden .. but at the end of the day, they just want their children to have the best education ..

well instead of rotting at home or at the farm, children should be sent to school .. you never know what a good education can give to a child .. (oh .. you can write about the gender thing too .. boys from poor families get to go to school, girls will have to wash and cook at home~.)

gd luck with writing~! i'm doing one right now too~! haha .. but it's on communications ..

Um. I think even low class families do struggle to send their kids to school so that they can reach their full potential and achieve a standard of life that the parents themselves might not have managed to achieve. I think those that refuse to send their kids to school do it not because they are afraid their kids would lose their values and roots but more because they can't afford the fees, or they need their children to help out with family chores and such. Or unless they belong to a religion or cult that rejects the idea of going to schools.

Afterall, isn't the point of education to increase your knowledge about the world around you and so that you can have a better appreciation for your culture?

To be honest, in this day and age, I highly doubt any family refuses to send their children to school because of the possible risk of them losing their roots and values. I mean, even in olden China, parents would wish they could send their children to school to become scholars.

I know this because I guess my Dad can be counted as coming from a 'low class family', as you put. Even though he was largely uneducated, he managed to do well for himself. He knows that education is not necessary for one to do well in life, but it is a useful tool in achieving your goals. He never stresses me to do well, preferring that I actually enjoy going to school and learning new things, and haha yeaa, I think my Dad is the best. Lol.
