Hey guys, ah no, sisters and brothers^^
I'm a newcomer here so I don't know if Oxy has ever had a topic before mellow.gif
Actually I'm in 11th grade - a junior student in Vietnam, and I'm going to apply for Oxy in Fall 2009. People say that almost schools in CA are mean (stingy - not give you our money so easily biggrin.gif ) but I really love CA and wanna be there. Occidental, according to the old statistics from 05-06, offered need-based scholarship to only 4 international students blink.gif But the coolest is we can take free waiver rolleyes.gif I want to ask if any people here is currently a student in Oxy or used to be in Oxy, can you share some tips and experience?

I've downloaded the app form of Oxy and I really feel fascinated rolleyes.gif The third essay question is so amazing: "Ask and answer the one important question that you wish we had asked" biggrin.gif All I'm worrying about now is the required Toefl ibt score: it needs more than 100 w00t.gif SAT I, II dry.gif

Please help me smile.gif there are not so many people in my nation studying in Oxy (only 3 exactly), but I can never find a contact dry.gif If possible, can you give me your Y!M or anything else that we can chat? My Y!M is Simblackfog9691@yahoo.com, thanks in advance^^.

P/S: should I apply for some Ivy League???????? biggrin.gif The abroad students in my school said that we can have free waiver, so why don't we try for a luck tongue.gif

I never actually stepped foot at Oxy, but I heard many great things about it.
I know a couple of ppl that go or went there, and 100% of them had a great college experience. It makes me, a USC student, want to go there.
Anyway... know that Oxy is a liberal Arts school... and actually one of the best in the country.
They have a great international relations program, and an interwhip program with the UN, if im not mistaken.
good luck.

Oh thank you so much! You give me more hope for sure^^.
Can't believe it, you're a USC student??? I really wanted to go to USC, but I've recently given up, because when I saw USC app form, they gave limited aid for international students (only 100 awards of tuition for 100 best people T_T, regrettably, I'm not such a genius)...so sad, though I fell in love with USC for the first time when I read about it in the book "Choosing the right college", I couldn't go on, because my financial condition can't allow me to do so.
I think you're very lucky to be a student at USC. You know, I was really kind of "crazy" about USC for a long time^^, wrote "USC" everywhere, spent all day talking about USC without bore...
Can you tell me something about the life in USC and California? Oh, they say USC is "university of spoiled children", but I never think USC of that way! In me, USC is a beautiful school with great students who always study^^.
Again thank you for your information. Coincidentally, I'm going to study international relations...so good, and maybe Film & Cinematoghraphy (some Oscar winners graduated from Oxy^^).
Now there's one problem, should I apply for ED...

I stayed on campus for two and a half days as a prospective freshman earlier this year (March, I think) and liked it, so I can tell you a little more. I almost decided to go, but then I chose to go to the University of Toronto instead. Yeah, really similar, aren't they? laugh.gif

-It's a beautiful campus.
-It's really small. It's a tiny liberal arts college with a really different feel from a larger university.
-It's not that far from Los Angeles and also not too far from multiple beaches and Pasadena, but you need a car (or a friend with a car) to go anywhere interesting unless you want to wait for a designated shuttle day.
-The attitude seems to be pretty laid-back, but that doesn't mean the people there don't take studying seriously.
-There aren't very many Asians at Oxy, especially compared to other schools in California. There are more of other minorities, though, and Oxy places a lot of emphasis on social awareness when it comes to race, gender, socioeconomic class, etc. On the other hand, though, there were some incidents last year and racial tension.
-The students I met generally seemed to be enjoying their college experience and they seemed pretty relaxed.
-All of the classes were pretty small and very interactive. Students get a lot of interaction with the professors and their classmates, so they get to know each other much better than at a big school like mine.

Sorry, I can't really tell you much more than that. I eventually decided not to go because it's such a tiny school and I wanted more science course choices. That, and also Eagle Rock didn't appeal to me much since it's a suburban area. I like being in the middle of the city here in Toronto. You might like the small size and suburban location, though.
Hey, look! Finally a different signature after all these years!

USC?
um.... okay. I love my school, and i dont know anyone who doenst love it either.
Why wouldnt you love it? Beautiful campus, beautiful people, beautiful weather, great academics, awesome student life, great great great diversity (much better than UCs, where you always find extremes).

USC = University of Spoiled Children? Perhaps. it's not a cheap school. but i like being spoiled. i think people who prejudge me and think im naturally spoiled are a bit superficial. I go to USC because as an international student I refused to pay almost $30000 to go to a state school (i.e. UCs). If you can afford to go to a private school, i'd say go ahead and do it. If not, that's fine too... undergraduate school is not that important anyway (unless ur in business or Communications). Since im planning to go to grad school at USC, it makes more sense to me.

by the way... Oxy is a great school too. don't let the USC brand name outshine what smaller name schools have to offer. who knows... you could actually have a blast. Education is what you make of it.

Thank you so much for your help joogrlpekaun, It seems like the Oxy site doesn't provide me as much information as you biggrin.gif
Actually I love big urban cities and large schools (that's why I fell for USC^^), but large universities really offer little aid for international students, or very limited. I've researched on the financial aid recently, and I think the liberal arts provide us more. I know there're some schools that offer huge aid packets...the Ivy League rolleyes.gif but I don't dare to dream of those!
I've always asked why almost all students in my country choose liberal arts while the big universities are more interesting in both academics and social life. But now I can anwser why, the reason is only and forever financial aid^^ (you know only 4 Vietnamese students study in Harvard, 1 in MIT, 2 in Stanford, I'm talking about the guys who receive full aid...so rare...but you can't count at kinds of Bates, Colgate, Connecticut and Lafayette^^)
The biggest reason for me to choose Occidental is: I love LA and want to go to the Hollywood land. I've always wanted to make films, so I don't mind its size and location^^. Just know that Oxy is a great school, in LA...gives me enough love^^.
P/S: After reading your post I really worry about the racial discrimination, maybe I have to learn about Oxy more carefully, especially on this issue, really complex...

@hotspicedcider I think if you can go to USC, you're not a spoiled child^^ If you are, more exactly to call you a "spoiled nerd" tongue.gif
UCs seemed to attract me at first, but then I soon realized that: "We don't offer financial aid for international students" - quoted from the app form of UCLA dry.gif Hell, my family contribution to a school is only 1000$ a year, so I must consider carefully.
Ew, wish I could study at USC...maybe I'll try hard to earn money, and then study graduate at USC biggrin.gif
Thank you for your advice about Oxy. I really like your saying "Education is what you make of it". Hope I can go to Oxy in 2009 and enjoy the "City de la Angels" (I must be crazy, sorry wink.gif )

Ah, one more question, is Oxy far from USC???? If I could go to Oxy, I would like to visit the USC campus biggrin.gif

You shouldn't have to worry about it; I just thought I should mention that there was some. First of all, that was last school year. Second, it was mostly involving just a few stupid people and it wasn't like an everyday thing. Third, it had nothing to do with Asians, so no Vietnamese people were involved as far as I know. Fourth, Oxy puts a lot of pride in social awareness on campus, so most of the people who go there actually value diversity of racial and economic background. Sorry if I scared you! laugh.gif

Phewwwww...I feel happy at last laugh.gif
Thank you so much (actually you scared me a bit rolleyes.gif)
So at last Oxy is a perfect choice: safe^^, excellent academics, diversity, LA^^.
But do you know if there are a lot of parties in Oxy? I really hate parties (parties, not ceremonies, things like you guys gather together, having countless bottles of beer, chatting, dancing, then drunken people fights...but something like traditional celebration parties - just have serious purposes is ok), so I won't go to a party school huh.gif I don't want to hear sarcasm about my studying when everyone is outside cheerful in a party biggrin.gif

"Hope I can go to Oxy in 2009 and enjoy the "City de la Angels" (I must be crazy, sorry )"

sukadaichi you may be in for a little dissapointment as both schools are not located in the best cities. occidental has select areas that are well off but the general area that surrounds occidental is not too great. USC is even worse. anyone who tries to claim that USC's surrounding area isn't ghetto is lying through their teeth smile.gif. the campus looks nice and clean though. it is near downtown LA, little tokyo, and koreatown, which may be a plus to you.

in my opinion you shouldn't let money dominate your decision about UCLA. if you can get in you should give it some thought even though UCLA won't give you any assistance. if you come to CA you should go take a peek at the UCLA campus. honestly i think those people who argue that USC > UCLA are missing a couple bolts in the head or they're just blinded by school pride wink.gif. there is no bias here as i'm not a bruin. usc was a big turnoff for me when i was deciding which school to attend and i ended up rejecting my s.i.r to USC. this was 4 years ago. i visited usc a couple weeks ago and i'm still not impressed. i may end up going there for their masters program though. if they found this thread i bet they wouldn't even look at my application! the good thing about USC though is that their application process is much simpler than the UCs, gotta give them credit on that. they also make very good license plates, gotta give them credit on that too wink.gif.

@spicyspaghetti6 : UCLA - the problem here is not only I don't have enough money to go there, but also my studying ability rolleyes.gif I think I'm not good enough to be accepted. About the ranking, I know that UCLA stands at a higher place than USC but I don't mind the ranking^^. When I found out that both gave really little aid, I gave up researching^^.

Both UCLA and USC are wonderful school (at least in their own ways I think^^), and being there means a huge pride...I know nothing so I can't compare, but anyway, thank you so much, so much for your advice spicyspaghetti6 ^^
