maybe this question sounds a little bit dumb but do you guys think it's too late to start playing an instrument at 18 years old? i've never really played an instrument seriously but i did pretty much self learned saxophone...lately i've been wanting to start piano classes but im afraid i might be a little bit too old since i believe piano takes years and years of practice to become good
i dont consider myself a music person even though i enjoy listening to it, i don't think im one of those lucky people with natural music talents huh.gif
now i know a lot of people are going to say..."better late than never" but i still want some opinion

I'm actually in the same situation as you. I had never attempt to learn any instrument until recently when I entered college. I'm currently taking piano class for non-major, and gosh it's hard. I guess it's more difficult to learn anything at an older age, but if we have persistence i'm sure we can do it. Fighting! lolz

I can't picture myself loving anyone else, but them

It's never late to start anything, I just recently started how to play the drums and the piano last year at the same time. It all depends on how hard you work at it, it might be better to start when you're young because you don't have much responsibility and a lot more time then adults, but never the less if you keep at it, it won't matter.

^ yup so true...if you're still young, you don't really have as much responsibilities as an adult

I really want to learn how to play the piano and not just know how to play it but be a pro xD - well I've learned like 1 classical instrument in my whole life time xD it's not too late, just make sure you have the time U_U

I honestly think it depends a lot on the mind set also.
Like-- I think older people tend to try and learn an instrument while looking at someone who's really good and they think
"Oh, I want to be like that."
So they try but if they don't do that well they get frustrated and feel like quitting, you know?
So you have to think like.. "I just want to be able to play", and if you're patient with yourself it'll work better. smile.gif

But, yeah, definitely learning at a young age would be a benefit.

it does take years and years to be really good but if it's something you're looking to enjoy go ahead and do it. no one will look at you weird or anything since lessons are private anyways. maybe at the recitals people might think you're strange playing easy peasy songs but since you already have some sort of musical experience, skipping levels is definetly an option. you just need to find the right teacher (cause some teachers are hella slow moving)

i think you should get a friend to teach you some basic stuff and see if you enjoy it first. If you enjoy it, age isn't a problem, no one will think it's strange if you're loving it. (besides if you decide to do it later on you'll be even older XD and if you don't try it out you'll regret it!)

I don't think it's too late at all. Utada Hikaru learned guitar only very recently, yet she managed to learn it fairly well, as was the case with Madonna. Also, I believe Lisa (aka Fantasiimaker) took up guitar only like a year ago.

its never too late to start anything , as long as u r hardworking enough then u can even play that particular instrument better than anyone else. Maybe you even have that particular talent in u and u didn't even know it until u play it. So why not give it a try. I remember learning trumpet when i was like around 14. Yeah i tot i was late also, but my conductor said i have talent -.- but then i quited at last ,because i don't get to practise in my house , or else i'll get sue O.o ... omg ... but now i m having an exam. I m planning to learn another instrument after the exam >.< .. btw i m 17 already .. so its around like 18 >.< ... i m actually planning to learn either flute, violin , gu zeng ( a chinese instrument * i want to learn this .. cos not much ppl play this) or maybe trumprt back ( but trumpet not so .. cos my whole family give me the u r so noisy look when i carry a trumpet)... hahaha

it's not too late.
in fact, if you really truly WANT to learn it
you'll end up better than some people who started at six
and don't want to practice biggrin.gif

older = more discipline? hopefully XD

good luck with your endeavors. ;]

Look at it this way.

Do you have a deadline? If you're gonna learn an instrument, you have the rest of your life to learn.

Unless you're not planning to be serious about learning it, I don't think you should start. Years of practice is what it takes, but you got time.

Are you going to be a concert performer? I don't think so.

Why would it be too late?

Without being offensive, I hope you realize how ridiculous the question sounds.

Nooooo such thing as natural talent =P But it's never too late to learn how to play an instrument ^^ However, I will say that it will be much more difficult to learn it at this age rather than at the tender age of 4! But if you're very determined to learn it and you have lots of patience, you'll do just fine!

It's never too late to try something new smile.gif

I just recently started piano lessons, and I'm 16. My parents wanted me to learn when I was like 10 and now I really regret not learning earlier but I'm glad I'm finally taking lessons biggrin.gif

It isn't late at all. biggrin.gif
My math teacher's like 20+ and she told us she's learning piano.
So don't worry. :]
Besides, if you have the passion and practice a lot, you'll improve fast.

it´s never too late to start something new. sure, when you´re very young you have a lot more time. plus, kids learn faster than adults/teenagers. but on the other hand adults (gosh, i make it sound like being 18+ is old lolz.) are alot more determined and serious. so that makes up for it.

plus, it´s all for fun, right?

I'm 17 now and I want to take up piano lessons soon, maybe in another year, so that's exactly like your situation right now. I don't think its too late... Its never too late although I do regret quitting piano when I was 6... =\
