i've tasted desserts from both asia and europe and theres no place that uses sugar as liberally as the US. i mean just take the average american donut and compare it to say...chocopie. i swear the amount of sweetness in an american donut is 5x the sweetness of chocopie. its to the point where i find many american sweets disgusting b/c im just choking on sugar.

another thing ive noticed is the lack of other flavors in american desserts vs asian and european desserts. like for example many european desserts have a creamy or butter taste but american desserts dont have any flavors but sweetness. even american chocolates cant compare to its european counterparts. when i eat chocolate imported from Germany, every bite actually has the fabulous chocolate aroma but when i taste hersheys or snickers or whatever american chocolate, the chocolate aroma is completely covered by sweetness.

maybe i just have different taste buds and dont prefer american sweets but does anyone else agree that american desserts are overly sweet and lack other flavors and aroma?

it's always been like that.
that's why i never get cakes or anything at american grocery markets like albertsons or safeway.
i like asian, european, and mexican bakeries.

Yep yep, my parents dislike american desserts for their sweetness. I personally like Asian desserts too, the light and creamy ones, but a few over the top chocolate desserts wouldn't hurt once in a while ^____^

I have a sweet tooth so I don't mind it as much. But some desserts can get TOO sweet even for me and it's pretty gross. Kind of gives me a stomach ache.

I completely agree with you. My bf, though, loves American desserts because they're so sweet. I mean, I do too, but some are just too much that it's not really tasteful to me.

i agree with you too. in my elementary school, it's common for teachers to go out to buy the cakes for a class party or event, and the cakes would usually be from safeway or somewhere where it's made with practically sugar..all that icing..and the cupcakes and everything. yeah i appreciate those finer chocolates from germany..belgium etc.

yes - american food is sweeter, bigger, saltier
i lived in america for almost all my life but never noticed it. now i live in korea and everyone who visits america during the summer says the food is so fatty
even i couldn't eat chunky soup that was imported from the states, because it was too salty. and it's only been a year

I don't know about American desserts but Thai desserts are way, waaayyy sweeter than Australian ones. The Thais put sugar in absolutely everything; even bread.... so sooo wrong.

yes happy.gif but i actually love american desserts. cakes, sundaes, brownies, donuts, cookies, pies, etc... i love sugar. so i have to get some pastries (danishes or pies or cheesecake) and chocolate everyday or i'm a very unhappy person. but yes, usually i don't buy american brands of chocolate because they just don't taste as good. i prefer cadbury or lindt for supermarket varieties.

i maintain that asian people do not know how to do dessert properly. they'll make pretty little cakes and tarts and jellies, but they won't taste half as good as they look.

the french do the best desserts ever! textures and flavors and presentation... i miss paris.

That's because all our desserts here are basically influenced from desserts of other countries, except with one modification: a handful of sugar added to everything biggrin.gif .

I can't eat 99% of the American desserts here (well, I can EAT them...but I'd feel sick after XD) I can't even eat a normal donut without feeling whoozy from all the sugary-goodness (yes, there is such a thing as TOO MUCH SUGAR. Didn't know that existed until I moved to North America ^^) I really REALLY miss Japanese desserts....

Yes. American desserts are LOADED with sugar. That's why I only eat donuts only once in a while. I guess taste buds are different? I've heard some kids in my school saying that asian desserts suck because they aren't even sweet, but I think they are just right.
