This Grade Is Killing Me, And It's Making Me Hate School.

But a few weeks ago, I got a 79 on a French test.
Now, I wouldn't have such a problem with it normally, because heck, I've failed tests before and still managed to get my grade up. But for him, he has about two tests a year, and tests count for about 50% of the grade.
I think it's wholly unfair. For one, I've consistently gotten 97's and above in my French classes all throughout high school. This my senior year. I had this same teacher my sophomore year and my junior year. I've displayed my French ability to him and he knows that I'm not a bad French student.
Secondly, I was absent the day he told us we were going to have a test the next time we met. So, the next time I went to French class I got jumped with a French test that I didn't expect to take.
Thirdly, everyone in the class (only 6 people---small class) did poorly on that test. I got the second highest grade. The lowest was a 49. The highest was a 92.
My grade in that class is currently an 88. That's a B in our school. That's not such a huge deal, I know... but the thing is, I could lose my class standing because of ONE test. One MEASLY test. Everyone in our class is really close in class rank. People are hundredths of a point apart in our super competitive class. I've worked so hard all three years of high school in order to stay on top. Countless nights downing coffee, many-a-sleepless weeks.... and I don't think one test that I took in French should have that great of an impact.
What do I do? Ask him for extra credit? Honestly, I'm afraid of him thinking I'm a grade monger, which I am to an extent. But the thing is, I don't think my French teacher likes me. I don't want him to HATE me now.
Sigh.
I don't know what to do. I kind of feel like crying but I like a fool at the same time. Please give me some input or advice. There's only one month left in the quarter. I must act soon because he's going on paternity leave.

If he's an understand teacher, he would do something about, if not then idk =\
And ur school goes by quarters? weird, I thought all hs go by semesters nowaday =o
In my opinion, it seems like u care ALOT about grades. I have learn to not make such a big fuss out of my grade anymore, after all, u tried ur hardest and if u have one B in ur whole HS career, then ur just unlucky. Yes it would pissed u off the rest of ur life, but hey a grade is just a grade.

Last year in my math class, the lowest was a 0.
I think you should turn in all your work and score better on the next test.
I know, last year, math tests/quizzes for us was worth 64%
So you are definately not alone. Work hard!

Butyeahh, it's just this one quarter, right ? Just try&make the grade next quarter. Annd if he's going on paternity leave, maybe the replacement teacher won't be as tough. ianno, this is juss how I'd see the situation if I were you.

&sometimes I think she's truly crazy, and I love it.

I think you should talk to your teacher. Of course we're hunger for grades, the fact is everybody loves grades, and loving good grades is not a crime! The only crime is we cheat to have good grades. Last year I stayed up many nights to study for my chemistry tests, and I got 7/10, lolz!
I think you're an excellent student, so don't let the tiny problem affect your dream and future. Maybe, maybe it can not do any harm to your final results, but it makes you worrying for days..that's bad.
So persuade your teacher to give you another test or even hand him a tough essay, many ways...I believe if you have the second chance, you'll get 100 for sure.
Good luck^^.

i suggest talking to him and basically telling him everything you said here. ask to retake a different version/form of the test, or if you can do extra credit. if he says no, get one of your parents and meet with the principal or something. sorry, but that's just ridiculous to spring a test on somebody when they weren't even at school when he told everyone about it.
and who cares if he ends up hating you? what's more important, his opinion is of you, or getting the best grades you can to get into the college you want to go to? if you manage to get him to give you a different test or something and he really seems like he hates you, make sure to have all your homework and stuff near perfect so he can't find a reason to dock you points. and if you miss anymore school, double-check with people what the homework is and if there are anymore surprise tests/quizzes.

i don't think it would make a difference if you tried talking to him either, unless he's super nice and will let you retake it. tests are tests regardless of how well you've done before or in general. even the smartest people mess up sometimes and do poorly. i would say, move on and do well from now on.

You are responsible for the days you are absent from school, and you should have found out whatever information or material you missed out on.
There's no excuse, and in my opinion, it'd be generous of your teacher if he allowed you to compensate in any way.

i have an 86 right now and ive come to the realization that there isnt anything i can do to change that. hes just too nit picky this year...and never lets anyone do any extra credit.
BUT we have another test coming up so if you do well..those two test grades will avg. out and your grade should go up significantly.

I totally agree.
You're a senior so you should keep up with the class even when you are absent. If you were absent, you could have checked with other students in the class to find out what's going on.
& I'm assuming that you're taking AP French since you're a senior. In that case, its an AP class it's supposed to be hard.
Last year when I was in AP Spanish 4, I got a 34% on one of the tests. It was no big.

if the highest grade is a 92 that means it wasn't an impossible test. true, you weren't there to be informed there would be an exam, but it's your responsibility to find out what's going on in the class if you're absent.
harsh, but sometimes you learn things the hard way.
i did in my bio class freshman year, and i had to withdraw from it.

she was like okay! turn everything in now and everyone did and i was sitting there and like WHAT? WHAT STUFF? with a few other student.
she told us she'll let it go this time but next time whatever on the calendar she hand out is the due date no expection.
that how college is no expection.
what your teacher did is getting you ready for college basically and
beside you have a B wth. it won't lower you gpa that BAD!
beside you have a good grade. so you shouldn't be complaining.

You could whine to your teacher and see what he says. Instead of whining here. That'd be more productive. And if he likes you, you might get what you want.
But seriously, get used to it. If you blame missing one day for getting you a 79, then your study habits must not be that good.

srry if this doesn't help, but i'm just letting you know that you're not alone
*edit
since many people did not so well on this test, maybe try to persuade your teacher to curve it??
