Yeah, honey tea and water.
But if the cough is really bad, like you can't even get to sleep because you have to cough and you wake up because you have to cough (happened to me this year, it was really horrible. It started like a normal cough and in 4-5 days I felt like I would cough up my lungs. and it was a dry cough.), then see a doctor so he can prescribe medicine.

stay away from your sugary or diet drinks. Most diet drinks use an artificial sugar that gets caught in your throat and can make it feel even worse.

I have really bad allergies all year round, so I'm pretty much a victim to a clogged throat all the time. Drink lemon water. Squeeze the juice from a few lemons and keep it in a small bottle in your fridge. Whenever you drink a glass of water, pour out a bit of lemon juice into it (less than a tablespoon, I woud say). Just enough to give it some tangy sourness. During the day, fill up a water bottle with water and lemon juice (just pour in some lemon juice) and sip sip sip! This has worked 100% for me, and on days when I don't have class and am just lazing around the house, I can feel the difference! My voice -- singing wise -- has gotten better, I can go through a whole day without coughs or sore throats or scratchy throat... it's great.

Lots of water should help keep away that persistent "itchy throat" cought that one might get sometimes... those are irritating too. I get those sometimes, but I haven't gotten them since I started keeping myself properly hydrated but the humid weather has helped too. Invest in a humidifier if that kind of cough is keeping you from getting proper sleep.

^ all of the above. But..

A personal thing my mother does for me (which I find really helps besides prescription meds) is hot water and sliced ginger. Drink the ginger water, and after wards chew on the ginger pieces. It'll help warm the throat and relieve irritationg for a while... Usually, I drink it once a day for about a week and my coughing ends. [Note: This is after I've taken the proper medication for my cold. If you are not sick, then this method is still effective]

it might just be a really bad habit.
when I was in elementry school, I ALWAYS coughed constantly
and I got into such a bad habit of it, I always thought I coughed because
I had a dry throat, but that wasn't really the case.
it was just a habit....
good thing I stopped biggrin.gif
