I already took pre-calculus and Calculus A last year but now that I'm deciding on a Biology major, I need Calculus B

I was wondering whether or not anyone's had any experience in being able to compare a summer math course versus the regular fall semester

i know that during the summer session you have a lot more time to study for it on your own, but less hands on learning experience and having the material taught to you (like more lectures and recitations classes)

and that if you take math during the regular school year, it can be tough if you have other tough classes (which i will.. orgo and the next year physics) but the tests seemed non-tricky..?

just wondering whether or not you think summer calc classes differ as far as grading and difficulty of exams?

btw if anyone here is from StonyBrook.. that helps too..

i would be taking the summer classes at the Manhattan campus only btw

thanks for any and all input wink.gif

I took Calculus 1 in the summer and now taking Calculus II. Obviously this can be different from your school, but at my school, there are 3 different summer semesters. Two of them last 6 weeks long and one last as long as a fall/spring semester would. I took my Calc. I during the 6 week semester. It was a bit tough going to class. I had to go to class four times a week and it lasted 2 hours a day. My teacher was cool and understandable. We had no final exam and only had 2 quizzes and 2 exams. He added couple of multiple choices on each test, normally calculus teachers don't do that. Now, taking Calc II, it's different. Since the teacher has enough time and don't need to dim down the class like during summer.

Several of my friends took Calc II during the summer, and the only real difference is that it goes much faster and you don't really go into depth because there isn't as much time. I'm horrible at math, so I never took it during the summer, but Calc II in the regular session is definitely much more forgiving when it comes to reading/learning new material. If you are decent/good in math, I said go for the summer session. If you absolutely want an A or learn the material better, go take it in the Fall.

yeah.. i'm not really adept at math...

though i got an A in pre-calc and a B+ in calculus, i think it was more about the easiness of the course and exposure to the material as much as it was about the work i put in

bleh.. it makes it difficult though because i am going to try other hard classes too.. (orgo and physics) sad.gif

i think taking it in the fall is better b/c there are usually more students that would take that class too during that time. If you get lost or confused while doing some of the problems like many students do, you can ask your classmate for help and all or have study sessions with them

the difference between fall and summer is that summer goes faster than the fall.

i had to take some math related class to graduate, and i hate math. but the class i took during spring/summer were better for me...in a way.
the teacher isn't teaching as many classes and they can answer your questions faster. they should also have office hours, so if there's something that you don't feel set with, go ask them during office hours.

Summer courses are just primarily quicker. (there's not much time) My summer classes only last 5 weeks. It's basically 15 weeks of (fall/sp semester) materials crammed into 4-5 weeks. It's hard because the professors don't necessarily explain everything thoroughly due to the amount of time they have, but I mean if math is your thing, go for it. I'm taking Cal II right now, I need 15 weeks, I HATE arithmetics!
