it's an independent project between me and a friend that will be due in middle march.
it's basically supposed to be an influential documentary on a highschool issue.
my basic question is: how do i approach this issue towards highschool students??
and of course, they will be filmed.
SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
my teacher was influenced into making this video when he was watching a documentary on the little rock 9 story
(the first african americans to attend a public high school, i think. sorry my memory is a little blurred from us history last year lol)
and they were treated really badly because of their skin color (and other reasons possibly?).
my teacher saw how much similarities the little rock 9 and my high school had in common.
YES MY HIGH SCHOOL.
in modern america, in the middle of the bay area, very well known to be DIVERSED.
yes we have tons of different race and ethnics and cultures and everything that defines diversity.
but we all still choose to stay within our own lines. (ie: when the people at the school wouldn't let the little rock 9 people go into school.)
please, let me remind you gently that it is not meant to be racist in anyway but statistics says this is true
(i'll find proof of this but my teacher said our principal and VP showed it to them at some meeting before)
BUT.
we don't go around hitting people on purpose or do anything bad to them but he noticed how not diverse we are.
we ALL stick with the same clique in high school and their all mostly in the same ethnic. rarely is there any diversity.
with that being said, they all do the same things and have the same interests.
and with THAT being said, there is the domino effect of one person not having good grades and so does the rest of that clique.
and so there is the the smart people clique where everyone gets good grades and are valedictorians.
sure there are clubs and organizations and school but it's still the same way.
don't be offended club presidents but, keyclub, leoclub, red cross etc. are predominantly asians.
while the only other clubs are don't contain them are probably black student union, latino society etc.
WHY VIDEO?
IMO, if pictures are worth a thousand words, then videos must be worth A LOT more right? it is the most influential product that youths are willing to watch.
the video is basically supposed to influence others to break the stereotype and be more diverse as a highschool.
it is meant for people to realize that you don't have to dumb down to your friends level to "stay cool"
it is meant for people to realize that you don't have to pretend to be someone you're not.
and many other reasons but for some reason aren't coming to my head.
WHY US?
my teacher choose me and my friend because we are probably as most diverse the school gets.
we are basically best friends but i'm more an asian AP nerd whereas he is an african american struggling thru school.
we break the stereotype basically.
why didn't my teacher make it himself?
basically, he explained to me it was because:
he grew up as a "whiteboy" in this very same town and is a teacher.
he believed that it would be a better idea to be coming FROM the students TO the students from angles of different people.
so please & thank you!
