Okay so I'm seriously thinking of changing my major to criminal justice but I'm not sure yet if I'm going to do that. If I stay with my current major, which is political science, I'm thinking of going into teaching high school and teaching American government. I saw with my major you can go into teaching but I'm wondering do I need a minor in education or just this degree? I thought about asking here first before going to my advisor since I figured that people would know here since a lot of people seem knowledgable. smile.gif Thanks in advanced!

you can do your creditials on the side if you want.

but most poli sci teachers, like mines,
they graduate in the degree that they want to teach,
and then they pursue their teaching credits.
or do it at the same time.

cause, majoring in education is different from wanting to teach poli sci.

you have to be a major in what you want to teach, get it?
cause, you'll know what you're talking about.

so. i hope you get it. get it?

good luck!

Oh okay. So if I want to teach American government I don't need to have an education major and still take classes that have to do with education if I wanted to? Right now I'm taking a criminal justice course and I figured that class would help me with my major and all. So this would go for high school as well or any level of education? Thanks for your help. smile.gif With education majors they mostly are for people who do like in elementary school where you teach everything, right?

It's so awesome that you want to teach!! I'm always happy to hear about people who want to become teachers (though I'm not majoring in education nor planning to be a teacher).

In my school, Political Science is known as a dead-end major because it's one of the easiest major we have on campus so I think it's good that you're already thinking about how you may start your career with it.

I don't know anything about criminal justice, but I recommend that you rely more on your advisor/peers/mentors than us soompiers. Every college program is different...so asking your college directly is probably more reliable. Good luck~

Thanks for posting. smile.gif Well I'm not sure though which route I'm going yet because I'm going to wait and see how the criminal justice major is set up since I already know what I want to do with that as well. I did think about doing campaign work with my career but then after thinking about it I thought about teaching American government. So I'm going to wait until next term to see what I'm exactly going to do. At my school the major doesn't seem very different from others where it concerns classes and stuff. I did have my major as a music major and I had to take basically the same classes as I do now with my political science class. Criminal justice you can do anything from social work to investigation to law and FBI. If I do go the route of criminal justice I want to do public work in social cases and eventually end up at the FBI. But I was basically wondering if I wanted to teach American government at the high school level if I had to have education as a minor or what. Thanks to everyone who has posted though thus far. smile.gif I have a lot more time before I have to really figure it out. Even if I don't go into criminal justice this class will still help with my major and teaching kids how the court system works since that's what the class is about I'm taking now. tongue.gif
