hi, complete newb to all of this. Is there anything besides personal satisfaction that galvanizes people to spend so much time and effort cosplaying. Seriously, some of this stuff looks ridiculously fantastic.

Are they famous outside of the cosplay circle? Is this kind of like Korea's version of uljjang, where they can use cosplaying as a vehicle for entrance in to entertainment?

Oh yeah, I'll probably be in japan for half a year about mid 2009 to study japanese in one of those japanese language schools. Can i actually go to these events and randomly take photos or is there some sort of protocol to be observed?

they are just groups of cosplayers (costume+play = cosplay) who happen to be unbelieveably good at it!
im sure they get into entertainment by going to cosplay conventions of gatherings in their country~
so when you go to japan to study you will probably see people dressing simular running around in the streets lol

I personally don't think they use cosplaying to go into entertainment industry so I'm not sure whether they're famous outside cosplay circle. But maybe some are models, you never know. But I never heard any of the cosplayers being actor/actress etc

Yeah, there are a LOT of cosplay events MONTHLY in Japan. I'm not really sure about protocol for each event, but for big event like Tokyo Game Show [usually held end of year, I think?], there are certain areas where you're not allowed to take photos of the cosplayer. Maybe the rules applied to other events too? Not sure.
