Canon Sd1000 Camera or other recommendations?

and i came across canon's sd1000 model while browsing.
i've been reading a bit about it around the net,
but i can't quite decide if i like it or not.
i know NOTHING about digital cameras,
and i made a failed purchase in the past,
so i really don't want to screw this one up..
are there users of this camera who are willing
to provide some input or opinions?
oh, and another thing that struck me was the price..
why is it so cheap?
there must be a catch, right?
i couldn't understand why the older versions
were more expensive.
thank you in advance!
PS - if there are other better cameras that you would like to recommend, that would be great too! i was also looking at some of the sony ones (the flat ones... i'm not sure what the model is called; i noticed a lot of the girls had the pink ones) as well, so some input on those would be awesome.
PS2 - i'm not a photographer or anything, so i'm not looking for anything TOO high-tech. i just want a decent, stylish camera that will take high quality, clear, true images that can be used for family outings, nights with friends, etc.

I think the SD1000 is cheaper because it has less megapixels (isn't it 7 or something while newer cameras have 10+; however megapixels do not make a difference for the average point-and-shooter) and it's been out for about a year?...

It also has image stabilization which was previously only on their DSLR models (upwards of $800+) so taking shots at night aren't as blurry. Remember to get SanDisk memory sticks, they have a lifetime warranty and they're pretty good about sending out new ones if yours goes bad.
I just checked and the SD850 IS is already out, going for about $270 online. I suggest going for that model, i'm sure you'll end up keeping it for awhile. Hope the info helps!

it's cheaper because it lacks image stablization (among a few other things..). the sd1000 is as basic as it gets on the latest canon line of products. the sd 850IS, 870IS and 950IS are its better and more expensive siblings.
the fuji f50fd or it's predecessor the f40fd also takes some nice pictures

Woooooah, post #1! Welcome. I don't think I've ever seen anyone with only 1 post as long as I've been on Soompi.
Anyway, yeah I agree with surreality about night shots. The darker it is, the more steady your hand has to be for crisp images. If you're anything like me (would never be a surgeon) my hands shake, especially when squeezing things like a camera button. I would seriously consider the IS feature if you can afford it. Tell us what you end up getting 3verlasting, and take some pictures to share with us hehe.

i've been browsing more and more..
and i'm seriously considering the sd1000..
does the IS (image stabilization) make a huge difference?
if so, then i guess i should reconsider..
but i'm really hoping on a purchase
that won't damage my bank account =P
but then again, i don't want to buy
another bulky camera... (the olympus ir-300 i got a few years back)
ahh the dilemma... what should i do? T-T;

canon 850IS or fuji f40fd would be my two best recommendations for compacts.
the canon a720IS for regular sized cameras
the a720 costs just a little more than the sd1000, but it's a much better camera. the only negative is that it's a bit larger. image stabilization could make a big difference in low light photography. the diff between a decent picture vs a blurry picture.
i'd say get the 850IS if it doesnt break the bank.
sd1000 if you dont need to take low light shots.

how much did u buy it for?
do u have a case for it?
i'm considering getting this..
but im getting at beach camera
http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.as...u=E1CNPSSD1000S
but i dont like the case...so
should i just buy it at bestbuy?
it'll be 175.99 (Camera)+17.99+the case (15.00 MAX,but i want a case that fits the camera itself perfectly,is there any camera cases (doesnt have to be canon) that fits this camera in? perfectly) =208.00+.07 tax= 226.00
is this worth it?
and im basically getting it because my old samsung camera i bought 2 years ago i had to give to my dad
so...we're going to guatemala and we basically need a camera good for outdoors..beach...is this a camera thats fit for the job

I can't really help you much with your questions, because I had my camera for only a day, but I'll try my best to help you. ^^;
Let's see, I think I got it for $176.94 (without tax) at Sam's Club.
My mom has a case like that, haha. I don't like the case that much.
I'm in need of a case too, heh.
But on Amazon, they have this: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PSC-1000-Delux...1822974-1754216
BestBuy: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1153999695708
The camera is definitley worth it, but I'm not sure about the case. Like it's nice, but it seems a little big for the camera.
And I think this camera is good for outdoors, especially for the beach. They have a beach mode installed already, but I can't seem to find it yet, haha. But it's definitley there.
Here's some pictures I took yesterday as examples. (Keep in mind I played around with the lighting and effects :x)

the camera isn't bulky and the outcomes of the pictures are nice ^__^
i have on too (though i don't like it at first because that one wasn't the one i wanted. haha but later on, i realized that the one i got was nice.
so no regrets!
so, what's your decision?
