Sorry if this has been brought up before. I just couldn't find any relevant topics. =X

I'm currently studying in Australia, and I'm thinking to do my masters degree in the US. Does anyone of you know any reputable business schools? They don't have to be true business schools though, it could be any uni with good business faculty. I'm undertaking international business as my major, so I'm looking for similar areas, or perhaps marketing.

I'm not familiar with the US college system, so can anyone tell me more about things like:

1. How much does it cost for a private and non-private uni per semester? How many semesters is there in one academic year?
2. What's a community college? Do they offer masters programs?
3. How much is rental cost in large cities? Are dorms cheaper than renting a place outside uni?
4. How much allowance is sufficient to get through per month?
5. Is there any particular state where there are lots of foreign students?

I prefer places such as California, New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Ohio. So if anyone of you know any good universities in those states, pls provide me a link of the uni. Thanks! smile.gif

1. Private Universities are going to cost ALOT more then public ones, yuo're also out of state, out of cuontry student. You can go on their website and look up tution prices. Don't forget you need money for books too, if I can range upto 500 a semester for books. Depends how many classes you are taking and such. California Universities are on quarter system (I think, 3 in a year or was it 4?), Berkeley is on semester. Community College are on semester.

2. Community College is a 2 year school and will only get you as far as an associate degree. It won't get you a bachelor or masters. People who go to community college usually transfer to a university after 2-3 years (having completeed their lower division courses, around 60 semester units)

3. Renting an apartment is alot alot cheaper then living in dorms.

4. You'll need money for rent, food, and tuition.

university of southern california has one of the best graduate business programs in the nation.

i'm not sure about the grad school, but undergrad is on a semester schedule, 2 semesters in an academic year. also, tuition is about $17000 a semester.

community college is not what you're looking for.

renting non-university housing is generally cheaper, however it is usually completely unfurnished--no appliances, furniture, etc... so many times university housing is a better optoin.

probably around $100/month for groceries is good. then whatever else you need to spend money on... textbooks, shopping, going out on weekends, etc.

USC has the most international students out of any university in the US. (or maybe its the most number of countries represented? either way, it's a lot)

Okay, so earlier my computer was being funny and submitted everything in one paragraph, GRRR. But now I fixed it!!!!

Hey! Okay, so I'm currently at USC in the business school, most likely concentrating in either international business or global marketing, so I hope I can help.

Here are some recommendations for you, you can go to all of their websites and look up their programs in detail:

California:
USC
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Stanford

New York:
NYU
Columbia

Illinois:
UChicago
Northwestern

Pennsylvania:
UPenn (REALLY cutthroat and hard to get into)
Carnegie Mellon

Schools that I would advise you not to really try:

-Georgetown, only go here if you want to go into investment banking

Here are some other business schools not in the states you requested:
-Boston University
-MIT
-Harvard
-George Washington University

1. Most schools offer the semester system which consists of 2 semesters (fall and spring) but you can also take summer school. Tuition is going to be around 40-50,000 per year depending on the school. It doesn't matter if it's public or private because public schools only offer the cheaper tuition to students in state. Though 40-50,000 is a lot, many schools offer financial aid. The only downside is that some schools are stingy when giving financial aid to international students. (I know this is especially true at USC, but financial aid is still possible. I have a friend from Hong Kong who is on a half-tuition scholarship.)

2. Yeah, you definitely don't want ad community college.

3. It's usually best to live in university housing your first year to be able to meet people. (Plus it makes life a lot easier.) After that, it's not too hard to find affordable housing in the area because many companies cater to students. (New York might be a problem though, housing is really expensive in NYC.)

4. You should basically decided this for yourself. What you think you will spend etc. I have a lot of friends that don't spend anything, and some that spend a lot5. Most big name universities will have a lot of international students, but I know that USC is known for it. You can usually find their statistics on their websites.

From my experience: I really like USC and they are really focused on the international sphere. I also got into NYU, but choose USC because the administration was A LOT more supportive of its students. I'm an undergrad though, and its probably different. When I personally go to grad school, I am looking most at UChicago, Harvard, UPenn, and Columbia. Maybe Stanford, but when I visited, I didn't really like the campus. The reason that I don't want to go to USC for grad school is because I want to try to experience something new. smile.gif

One of the most difficult programs and elite business schools that is popular is most definitely UPenn. If I liked on that side of the country, it would STILL only be a dream.

U're looking for a business school in Pennsylvania then I would recommend Temple University(I also go to this Uni biggrin.gif). Its business program is very good and ranks highly nationwide & even worldwide. The tuition is pretty affortable too.

1. 2 semesters per year, fall and spring. The tuition for Temple U.(Pennsylvania resident) is about $11,000.
2. community college only offers an associate degree which is not valuable. Unless u wanna save money you can go to community college for 2 years and then transfer to another university, otherwise, I wouldn't recommend going to it.
3. At my school, the cost for dorm is about $6,000 per year.
4. Cost for books per semester at my school is about $600. And then expenses for food and other stuffs...it's all depend on u
5. I lived in Pennsylvania and it's a pretty diverse state. Esp. Temple University, it ranks #1 diverse school in U.S.

I can't picture myself loving anyone else, but them

____________________________________________

1. How much does it cost for a private and non-private uni per semester? How many semesters is there in one academic year? Private colleges are WAY more expensive than public colleges. However, for grad school, depending on the program you want, they may offer scholarships or stipends (basically free money for you to live on while teaching undergrad classes or if you're doing research, just money to live of off since you will have no time to make any other income). So it really depends on the school. A lot of the top programs offers big stipends to their top candidates. I think the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn - Wharton School of Business) offers programs like those.

2. What's a community college? Do they offer masters programs? Community college is a 2 year college, kind of like pre-college almost, in between high school and college. They only offer associates degrees, which are "less" than a bachelor's degree (from 4 year college).

3. How much is rental cost in large cities? Are dorms cheaper than renting a place outside uni? It depends on where in the city you live, of course. If you're living in a big city, and the university is located in a nicer area of the city, of course the apartment prices are going to be quite expensive right near the school. But if you live slightly further away from school, the prices will be lower (though the area might not be as nice... or safe, depending on where exactly it is you live). Some schools might offer you scholarships or things that may cover the price of housing/dorms though.

4. How much allowance is sufficient to get through per month? Really depends on what city you're talking about. If you're talking BIG city like New York, Boston, Los Angeles, etc. then a lot. But if you budget well, and find some good deals on things, you could survive on a smaller budget. If you live in a smaller city (not a "major" city), then you will probably be able to get by on less. I can't really give you specific numbers cuz it will depend. But you will need to spend money on food/groceries, living expensive (if you have an apt-- like utilities, rent, etc), health insurance, tuition, transportation expenses (will you have a car or will you take buses and trains?-- car = more expenses, since gas is so expensive PLUS car insurance and maintanance fees).

5. Is there any particular state where there are lots of foreign students? Any state where there's a lot of colleges. For example, where I live (Massachusetts), there's tons and tons of college students and grad students in general. Even though we're a small state, there are lots of good colleges here. Boston, the big city here, is known as a huge college town. There's tons of foreign students, especially at Boston University, Harvard, MIT, etc. There is also New York of course, but if you want to factor in living expenses, New York City can be a very expensive place to live. The sales tax rate alone in NYC is like 8.25 something %. Your food will be more expensive, your rent will be more expensive, etc. I'm sure there's a lot in California as well. Chicago, Illinois also... there is a big Korean population there as well. Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, also have high populations of Asian people (Korean people in particular). But if you're interested in staying in the US after grad school, it'd probably be best to go to grad school in an area you actually might want to work in, because they'll be more and better internship opportunities for you. Major cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, DC, etc.
