umm... i'll try to help out but i dont really understand how i can describe how to do a split.
if ur fairly flexible, it should be easy.

1). one leg in front of you, one leg behind you.
- i can do this one fairly easily.. sorta of =/ ahahaha.
2). both legs to the side of you.
- this is the harder one to do. if u can accomplish this one, props! i cannot do this.

i dont know if that helped but u should just google it.

I was in dance & cheer so we did stretches such as sitting down a stradling your legs as far apart as u can..well, not too far. And then reaching both arms to one side of your leg and the other. Adn then reaching down in the middle as far down as you can go. It helps a lotttttt. I used to be able to lay my whole chest on the ground but not anymore =[

You have to do various stretching exercises and often. From what I remember from Tae Kwon Do the one I remember that really helped was when you're sitting on the ground with legs spread apart as far as possible, hitting/massaging the inner thighs closes to your crotch, then bending your body down trying to get your chest to the floor. Repeat several times. Also do it with the bottom of your feet together, and trying to get the outside of your knees to the ground by pushing on your thighs or a friend helping out.

Aw, jeeze. I'm an inch off on my good side. Ther'e not much to say other than hold the splits as far as you can go for a bit every day....which I haven't been doing. xD

I'm not sure about specific stretching exercises... but recently I'm trying to do the splits and I try everyday and I've become more flexible... so I'm sure if you keep trying, one day you'll be able to accomplish it! smile.gif

a little more everyday

i only could do them after a few years of dance as a kid... but thats cuz i started young too =(

Just keep pushing yourself down while doing your spilt. I can do it on both legs, but not on the side. I've been in dance for 7-8 years, and I just got all the way down last year.

Lunge one feet in front on, keep the back feet straight. Put two hands down on the ground and try to push the your body down to the ground keeping the back leg straight, and the front leg perpendicular to the ground. Lift up, then try to go to the split. Stay there for a while then go back to the lunge position. Just keep practicing.

I was able to do a split without stretching for a while but now I have to stretch or they hurt like hell. I haven't taken dancing in five years, and I'm growing older too. All I do now is social ballroom and I don't need any flexibility for that. Wish I have the time to go back to dancing.

I can still do air splits if I can get a good height on my jumps though. I have to run for a while before I jump though. I'm jealous of the people who can just jump up and do the splits.

all you have to do is practice doing a side split. I can do a side split with my left leg in front, but not the other way. I just stretched a lot and then i did it after a while. I really wasnt flexible back then either. I could barely touch my toes when i stood up. Im okay now smile.gif

Just curious, can you tear your muscles if you over-split? Like...you can do the splits but you keep pushing?
Picture form! You can only do this: /\, but you force yourself to do this: - -
*shrugs*
Sorry if that doesn't make sense. ><'

just keep stretching. and when your in the split position, hold it for at least 1 min. or more. do this everyday or frequently and you'll see results. it takes time so don't be frustrated when you don't see results immediately.

NEVER FORCE IT! you can tear a muscle or strain it badly.

When you see improvement depends a lot on how old you are, I think. I've been able to do splits with either leg in front for several years because I practiced gymnastics when I was little. You have to practice regularly, and really try to go further each time- keep pushing yourself down until it STARTS to hurt, but don't go anywhere near the point of injury- that's bad ⌐.⌐ (duh) XD

BUT uh

Any tips for splits down the middle? ^^;; I need tips for that~ I can do that butterfly stretch all the way down without hurting, but I can't go down the middle without my hips turning and making it into a regular split >< Is there a way to work on this without a person holding me down?

you should watch warm up videos of chinese dancers. I used to be one of them and damnit, let me tell you, the stretching was harsh. They tell you to hold positions for hell of a long time and honestly, they make it so you're like rubber =\. But yes, look up some of those professional dance videos or circus ones and you should be able to find some good exercises. Good luck becoming flexible lol~
