I don't know why but for some reason my cd rom/dvd drive reads and writes at very slow speeds even though its supposed to be 18x/52x

writing a cd with 10 songs takes like 10 min...
and importing a cd to my computer also takes 10 min mad.gif

and also wen im reading/writing a cd my computer cpu usage goes way up if that effects it in any way..

i think it might have something to do with DMA if that helps any... mellow.gif

Does any1 know a sure way to change from PIO mode to DMA?!

i had probs like this. windows resets your DMA to PIO mode if it has troubles reading your disc (more detailed explainations elsewhere)... theres tutorials on the net how to change a regkey to force it back to UDMA. before, i was burning dvds...and i have a 16x burner with 16x media..and it was going at 1-2.4X...and i was like WTF....so i stumbled upon some fixes..and its back at 16x again.

some links to get you going.
http://www.aiscl.co.uk/how_to_forcedma.php
http://www.google.ca/search?q=windows+forc...lient=firefox-a

i cant help you specifically, since its been a while since i had to do this fix. but if this doesnt fix it...maybe its your cd/dvd media... make sure you flashed your drive to the latest firmware to support more types/brands of media..and make sure your media is 52x (the speed you want)

^i think i have to edit the registry to get it to work... i followed the way on microsoft's website but its still in PIO mode sad.gif
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;158873

@ theory.. i dont think my computers that slow... still core 2 duo >_>

and wen i click the website u put... i cant find MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum as some of the registry entries... tears.gif

Try reinstalling your ASPI drivers. Use ASPI v4.70 at the link above, avoid ASPI v4.71. Reboot after installation and see if it's still in PIO mode.

If that doesn't work, try reinstalling your chipset/IDE/Bus Mastering drivers as well.

are there any programs out there that can put it into DMA mode? T_T
still doesn't work... i tried that adaptec thing and i tried reinstalling IDE drivers...

is chipset and bus mastering drivers included with IDE? or is it a seperate file? >_>

bus mastering drivers are usually with the chipset drivers but sometimes it's a separate download. What I would try doing next is right-click then uninstall your DVD burner in Device Manager. Next uninstall the secondary IDE channel that hosts your DVD burner. Click the button to Scan for Hardware Changes. If that doesn't work, reboot your computer, go into the BIOS and check the settings for the IDE/SATA channels. See if there's something there that you can change that might fix your problem.

^i tried uninstalling dvd burner and secondary IDE channel... still makes it go into PIO first? is it impossible to change from PIO to DMA frmo that screen? or it just my computer...

wat exactly about IDE and SATA channels would i be looking for? i've tried looking in my bios but the only thing it says about IDE is whether i want to detect another IDE drive (hard drives)

Just your computer apparently... biggrin.gif It's typically an easy problem to fix.

On your particular board... about the only thing in the BIOS that you can check for is to make sure the Access Mode for all the IDE channels is on AUTO instead of anything else. Also leave the IDE HDD Detection to AUTO or ON as well.

What I want to know is... is that DVD drive a SATA or IDE drive? Has it ALWAYS burned slow for you or just recently? How many different drives do you have and which are SATA and which are IDE?

Your board only has 1 IDE interface (for 1 primary and 1 secondary channel) and between 4-6 SATA ports. If it's IDE, and your only IDE HDD/optical drive... then make sure you're using 80-conductor IDE/ATA cable (thinner) instead of the older 40-conductor cable (thicker) which can prevent you from being able to run the drive in Ultra DMA mode. Also make sure you've got it plugged into the connector at the end and not the one in the middle of the cable.

its an IDE drive.. its always burned slow... i've always wondered why tho because my old computer it burned faster but has a slower drive... 16x compared to 18x... xD

and with the computer im using right now if i start importing a cd (into itunes) or burning a cd my cpu usage goes up like crazy so i just figured out its cuz its in POI and not in DMA mode sad.gif

ya im using a 80 pin ide cable and i have it plugged in at the end... im gonna try and add another cd drive and see if i can run that 1 in DMA...

is there a high possibility its the motherboard thats not allowing me to go into DMA?

i just added another cd/dvd drive and it also went into PIO mode... i've tried 2 different ide cables.. different cd/dvd drives.. wat else can i test? O_O

Yes because initially many people had problems with getting IDE drives to work with DMA when the P965 boards first came out. Later BIOS updates/motherboard revisions fixed it. Unfortunately the only fix for an outdated BIOS (assuming ECS fixed it) is a newer BIOS upgrade. Since I remember you already toasted one board awhile back, I don't think you'd wanna attempt another BIOS flash. Anyways...

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Des...al&lang=eng

Those are the Intel INF chipset drivers for the P965 series boards such as yours. Run setup. Afterwards, I'd check to see if it's in DMA mode again. If not, uninstall the DVD drive and corresponding IDE controller in Device Manager then REBOOT and cross your fingers.

http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloads...d=2&LanID=0

This is the drivers for the JMicron RAID controller which may also be needed to get DMA working for you.

^the only reason i toasted the board was cuz i attemped to flash bios in vista... bad idea... xD anyways... i have the latest bios update from ECS... downloaded that chipset thing like 5 times... im praying the jmicron raid works T_T...

ok i restarted my computer... now jmicron is controlling my dvd/cd drives?

OMFG IT WORKS!!! I LOVE U VIET :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif huh.gif laugh.gif biggrin.gif

why can't you? what program are you trying to use? what does it say?

There really shouldn't be a reason why it would stop unless it's user error... like accidentally using the DVD iso/udf compilations instead of CDs in Nero for example.

i think it has something to do with being controlled by the jmicron thing.. like wen i right click the cd drive and go to cd properties i cant make it go into recording mode... and it says the drives are SCSI mode...

wen i use nero.. wen it hits 100% it says burning at 48x failed... i tried this twice.. i think i cant burn now so iunno but i can read cd's.. o_o

Where are you doing these things? Like when you say you right-click the drive and goto properties... are you talking about My Computer / Windows Explorer or something else?

Where do you see it say the drives are SCSI? In any case, it's normal for optical drives to be interpreted as SCSI drives. It has nothing to do with the actual physical interface but more of the SOFTWARE layer used to communicate with the drive. Optical drives use an ASPI layer to communicate with your computer and allow you to read/burn things. In fact, ASPI = Advanced SCSI Programming Interface and it's required for optical drives to work properly. Nero uses it's own ASPI drivers, DVD Decrypter has built-in ones and Windows has it's own [except 2K & XP which completely lacks an ASPI layer at all].

I would first try redoing your ASPI drivers first using v4.70 as posted above. If it doesn't work then try a newer/older version of it. I could not use v4.71 on my system... DVD drive wouldn't burn CDs or DVD with it on my system but it may be different for you. For the older version of Adaptec's ASPI drivers, try ForceASPI at http://www.radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm. It is based on Adaptec's ASPI v4.60 which is considered the most reliable version out there. I recommend ForceASPI if reinstalling v4.70 doesn't work. Just remember that you need to REBOOT after installing any ASPI layer for it to take effect.

PS: JMicron is not the cause of your problems. It's required for all of your motherboard's features to work properly. Most P965-based chipset users (myself included) use the very same JMicron controller as you do and the very same jraid.sys driver.

Here's my computer. Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard.

Like I said, the JMicron controller isn't your problem. And yes, my board is SOJU-powered for extra flavor.

Now I can write disks, but i can't do so successfully...

Every time it's in like the last 5 seconds and says its preparing the disk for usage... then that error pops up x.x
I get the same error using Nero as well... it says: Failed to burn at 48x(7200 kb/s)

Did you try ForceASPI yet? What happens if you used Nero to burn your CDs?

ya a installed ForceASPI

right now i'm trying to see if its any different if i lower the writing speed...

Using nero or the windows application, it always get to the very end when it says that its failed to burned...

Ok... i lowered the speed from 48x to 40 x and 1 cd burned successfully...
I tried burning some more at 40x and 48x and they failed... so 8 attempts today 1 successful...
