3.5" HDDs are so cheap these days.

A 400GB ext HDD kit was just AU$150. xD

Western Digital My Book is also good. I've been using one since last November.

If you can wait for a couple of more weeks, there will be a lot of sales on hard drives, both internal and external, on Black Fridays. Like 500 GB for $50.

I don't know where you read about that, but Western Digital is a very well known hard drive company along with Seagate. If the hard drive died within 3 months you would already have warranty on it if you registered it. Plus, I had mine for a year and it's still going strong, although I don't use it much since I have a 500 GB internal now.

Lol, the 250 GB during Black Friday would definitely be much lower than that. Mine is 250 GB and I got it from Best Buy last year for $80. Now, it could be lower, but the $50 price are usually after mail in rebates or with the cheap brands.

An external HD is just a regular hard drive within an enclosure. If you think there is wrong with it, you can take it apart and check on the HD itself. The HD should experience no more than a vibration. I would suggest making a backup just in case the HD fails.

Have a western digital too. although it's just 80g huhuhuhu ;-(
i also read that many people were complaining about WD external hdd... i was so scared when i read those comments because i already purchased the HDD. however mine's been working really good for the past months. no problem at all. so i think those are just WD detractors (?)
i also trust seagate and maxtor for HDDs.
