i was wondering since i've never driven sportshift automatic. I know u hab to shift up and down to change gears without depressing the clutch. How much does it lag compare to manual trans?

Because right now i'm planning to buy 2008 impreza (blue), with ultimate navi package (since my parents will drive my car sometime later on after i buy camaro =]).

if anyone drives sportsshift auto, tell me how it is...

btw i can't go test driving since im working all the time (wish i can hab more freedom), but i love subaru, especially the STI =]

edit- i've decided to buy manual since i've always wanted one, but i will test drive sportshift first and see how it is

I have not yet but some sportshifts, especially F1 versions like Ferrari does the shift in 0.1 seconds. Some may be slower. It really depends. Audi does the 2 clutch system in some of their sportshifts.

I'm planning on buying an Evo X MR, because of the TC-SST aka twin clutch sportronic shift transmission....philly/tri-state area roads suck buttcheeks and this will be my daily driver. the SST shifts faster than jesus.

i've driven VW's DSG transmission. a lot of people love it, but i'd rather just stick w/ my 3 pedals...

sport shift and an electronically operated manual are two different things. sportshift, tiptronic, or whatever other name it has been called still uses an automatic transmission and has no clutch. other systems like ferraris uses a manual gear box with an electronically operated clutch.

sportshifts suck major ass, its just fancy automatic to make people think they are cool. they generally take forever to downshift and even upshift and dont do it the smoothest. they are getting better all the time but you will still have an auto with a torque converter

electronically operated manuals are ok, i've driven a couple. obviously some systems are better than others the ferrari is supposed to be the best and the f430 scuderia has the fastest shifts. some systems are smoother than others, the lamborghini i drove wasnt the smoothest, i can shift smoother. also where and how the shifters are located makes a big difference in the feel of the system. the novelty of paddle shifts wears off after awhile for me, i'd rather have a standard gear box.

I disagree. Tiptronic systems nowadays are very good. The auto downshifting does take a long time, but not if you downshift yourself. Also, the technical difference in speed of shifting is something like .002 or something like that...so unless you're racing (and even then) you're not gonna be able to tell any difference. There's no "cool" factor in a manual either. Just cuz you got a manual doesn't mean you're any more "cool" than someone driving auto, or tiptronic...that's high school crap. Tiptronic it's just a matter of it's one little extra thing that's a little fun to use.

Well it has to go with personal preference. Some feel Auto or Tiptronic is for "noobs" people who don't know how to drive.

not all systems downshift fast. i drive porsche's everyday, the new tiptronic systems still take awhile to downshift when doing it yourself. there is no comparison to being able to do it yourself

well with an electronic clutch system yes they shift faster, some systems faster than people can shift. with 99% of tiptronic systems its not very fast. also in racing you dont shift as fast as possible always....

no but there is a fun factor auto transmissions and padel shifters will never be able to match

and its no comparison to the fun of a standard gear box. tiptronic sucks period. now smg, f1, etc are good systems if you dont want to use a clutch.

i don't know much about all this technical electro super transmissions. if you don't have a clutch to push on, it's automatic in my opinion. ppg gears for the win.

the f1 box still uses a standard gear box with a clutch. the tiptronic uses and automatic gear box (planetary gears, bands, etc) and a torque converter
