I assume this is the where this topic should go since it's about health. Sorry if it's not. :|

I'm sort of scared. How bad is it?
I think it's kind of late for me to be getting braces, not late meaning that they won't work but you normally don't see many people that are 18 years old with braces.
I'm 16, but I'm told I'll get them off when I'm 18.
So tell me.. what should I be expecting? Does it hurt?
Should I be careful if I kiss my girlfriend with braces on? blink.gif
What are your experiences with braces?

eh when its getting put on and the first 2 hrs it does not hurt.
well for me it didnt. but later on it gets worse and worse from soreness
it also feels weird to eat and talk in them . do not eat anything that is hard. it will hurt and you cant bite it.
i think rice , eggs , soft sandwich would be ok. and no gum the first 2 weeks.

Don't be scared XD I was scared when I first got my braces (mainly because my friend said it hurts like hell.) Then I actually got them and they only hurt for about a week while my teeth were getting used to the constant pressure on them. Mind you, I don't recommend eating anything chewy or hard for that week because it'll hurt a hell of a lot - __ -a

Honestly, if your teeth move quickly like mine you might be able to get them out after a year like I did XD

It only hurts for the first week then you get used to it. But every one or two months you'll have to go back to the orthodontist and get them tightened, which hurts for a further week. After a while of tightening the time that it hurts will gradually decrease. It'll go from hurting for a week to only hurting for two or three days.

Sure, you can kiss your girlfriend XD But be careful not to go to roughly or you'll end up cutting her > __ < If she has braces to them I suggest going really slowly ... you don't your braces to get attached to hers. So yeah ... be careful XD

From my experience ... your orthodontist will say no chewing gum; I chewed gum and yes, it got stuck but nothing broke XD But just in case, try to chew gum every once in a while. When eating steak (or anything meaty, chewy and hard) don't chow down like a rabid rabbit, chew softly and everything will be peachy keen n __ n
And, listen to your orthodontist. He/She knows what they're talking about XD

Yeah I'm scared because my friend told me that she mouth was really sore, she might've been exaggerating though, I suppose. Lol.
Hm.. a week eh? Doesn't seem like too long. But going to get them tightened seems like a hassle.

Oh yay! I can kiss my girlfriend with no worries then since she doesn't have braces. Woohoo. XD

No chewing gum.. I guess I can have mints instead after I eat. Haha. It seems like there's a lot to adapt to when you get braces.

Erm.. two people who got their braces entangled? O_O; I wonder how they manage to untangle themselves.

okay when they put it on
all you'll feel is the pulling of 3 hours of pressure on your teeth @.@
after, you wont feel the 'pain' after saying bye to the orthodontist
then when you come home, the pain starts to happen
its like this weird hard to say pain and you dont feel like doing anything that night
all you want to do is sleep it off
but its a lil hard to sleep off

then end. i'm lazy O_O

edit;
then you cant bite or chew for the first 5 days
like, you can put a piece and try to shallow it, thats what i did, went for days without chewing or biting
a little pressure even hurted for me , buts that only the first 3 days
after the days, its all over, your teeth slowlys gets strong again
and you'll be biting in no time
i was scared too
but dont worry
its one of those times where you think
"oh i remember when that happened, i thought it hurted but now when i look back on it, its not as big as i thought it was"

but almost every teeth tightening you get hurts =/
and i cant eat for 3 days of meat <3 because its chewy
T___________T

edit;

AND THE MOST CON OF THE CONS OF BRACES ..

-GETTING FOOD STUCK IN YOUR BRACES and you cant go to the restroom/pick your finger in your mouth at school ..
so make sure to have water with you smile.gif and rinse cause like .... its a major pain and my tounge hurts after sad.gif
its like 'dammit i wanna get that piece of rice but i cant because its a job for only fingers and toothpicks but theres no toothpicks around) T__________T

It depends how crooked your teeth are. But I think it hurts for everyone to some degree. Mine hurt for about a week. And you basically live on noodles and panadol. xD Well, I did. After that, it really only hurts when they tighten/change the wire and also if your teeth move really fast and excess wire starts going into your cheek. And try not knocking your month into anything because you might get these ulcer like cuts on your lip. Other than that, just be patient for your beautiful smile. biggrin.gif

3 hours of pressure on your teeth!? That sounds really not painful but.. probably annoying. And not being able to chew for 3 days.. i wonder how I'm going to eat at school.. live on ice cream for those 3 days? ):

I didn't know it was so bad to get food stuck in your braces. Haha. Does it happen ridiculously often?

But I like my smile right now D: Lol. The braces are only suppose to fix some small things that aren't too noticable, or so I'm told.

I have a question.. do they actually inject your gums and cheeks before they fix the braces onto your teeth? to make it numb?
because thats what my friend said when she got braces..

I still have to wait till January for my appointment .. bah

Lol, damn. I was worried you'd say that. tongue.gif Let me make an adjustment.. *even more beautiful. And two years is pretty long for minor things. Mine were sorta crooked and I had them for 1.5 years. And about chewing gum, I saw Extra chewing gum that said it could be used when you have your braces.. I think. And after you had them for a while, you get pretty skilled at getting food out. My friends eat chewy lollies and gum.

And at adolescent, I've never heard of people needing their mouth numbed. They're just putting glue on your teeth and sticking bits of metal on.

that's oK! my sis is nearly 19 and she just got her braces last week! haha.
It depends though, my teeth were reallly bad so it was kinda painful for me. getting the braces werent painful at all, just adding all the wires and stuff that they had to were painful >< it's just annoying sometimes that you really want to eat something but your teeth hurts ><

Yes, food getting stuck happens often and it sucks!!! But after awhile you know what food to avoid or choose when to eat. For me, I can eat rice and bread and don't worry. But spaghetti or noodles or meaty chewy stuff always get stuck:(.
Make sure to have a small mirror and bottle of water in your bag when going out of your house.

noo, no numbing because the process of getting the braces on your teeth will not hurt. Only after a couple of hours THE HELL will start. ph34r.gif

For the record, I'm glad I decided to get braces, even at this age. I can so totally see the improvements already. smile.gif

when i first got it. i couldn't eat for like three days. sleep.gif i had to drink stuff and eat soft things. i also couldn't sleep cause they hurt so much... man im so glad i got them off. rofl. anyways i had them for about 2 1/2 years. i love how my teeth turned out so they are really worht it. but like after the first three days when it feels like you wanna die, it gets better. you don't feel it after the third day. like the first two times i got my braces tightened it hurt but after whenever i got them tightened it didn't feel anything cause i got so prone to it. haha but anyways. they're not THAT bad. just pain for the first three days and that's it.

At my orthodontist, there was a mother who brought her child in, except the mother got braces instead of the child so i wouldn't worry about age for one. I got my braces about 2.5 years ago (i'm still waiting for the top set to get removed), so i don't remember everything in general, but it really depends on how crooked your teeth are, and how strong your gums are. When the doctors say to brush after every meal, they REALLY mean it because it helps a LOT. The first time getting it on they'll glue the brackets to your and the glue tastes nasty, and smells like lemon, so just...don't swallow. They'll have the saliva sucking thing so no worries. The hard part really is the wire, when they put it on and tighten it slightly, it WILL hurt like crap. For the next couple days it'll be a bit hard to chew, so eat softer things or cut bigger things and make it smaller so you can just swallow without chewing. A couple months later they'll add another ring to your inner molar so they could start tightening from there, and THAT will hurt even more than putting it on. Brushing your gums more (so they don't bleed) will give you two advantages. One being that your ortho won't yell at you (LOL) and the second being that it'll be a slightly less painful process when you go to tighten it every month. If it hurts TOO much you should ice it (wrap ice in towel so it doesn't totally freeze you) or your doctor may recommend you to painkillers like Tylenol (that helped me a lot once). You'll get used to it after a while.

it'snot bad at all, only the first week hurts because you're not use to it.
it doesn't hurt, but it is kind of annoying getting all of the food stuck in your braces.
and yeah i do think you should be careful kissing your girlfriend because you might cut her lips or something haha

For me, it hurt SOO bad for the first few days. But after a while, you can't feel it much. It only hurts when you tighten it
