because of some family problems (family death), i got a D in one of my classes. I took it again in summer school and got a A+. I'm going to explain to the colleges why i got this D.

but will it affect my acceptance by a lot? i'm soo scared, i feel like i'm going to be rejected because of this D, even though i'm explaining to them that there's a good reason for it. Can you still be accepted to UCs with like Ds? T_T

do they count the new grade or old grade in gpa calculation?

I have a friend who goes to UCSD, and this is what she told me:

She told me who UCSD admits are based on points. Like for example, 200+ hours of activities are worth 300-400 points. Playing a sport or being on a sports team gets you 100-200 points. Getting a perfect 4.0 is something like 700 points, Stuff like that, like you know what I mean. Anyhow, the people with the highest amount of points who apply to UCSD are admitted. And family deaths are worth alot of points. Like 500-600 points. I think you should be fine, the points from the family death should make up the points missed for the D.

If I sound shallow, I apologize. =/ Don't shoot the messenger.

But I am very sorry for your loss.

I should go shoot my dad or something, then.

^ -______-;;

I think it's okay if your reason is a good one, moreover, you took the time to make it up so it looks even better. It shows that you actually care. I got a D in a course and I'm retaking it this year too. x_x;;

0_o... So someone dying in your family is worth more than playing a sport and volunteering... Wow that sounds kind of messed up.....

Anyways, one of my friend's brother was accepted into Duke, got a D in some class (I think it was AP Physics) and was diagnosed with clinical depression and they didn't rescind his admissions. Of course he had a very strong resume, but I think they forgive. Although from what I've heard, they'd much rather see you do the same and overcome the tragedy to do well.

I'm in the same situation as the OP, but how do I mention that it happened in my application? In a way, it makes me feel guilty because it's like using a scapegoat :\

No. Someone dying in the family cannot be make up while sport and volunteer can make it up. I'm sure you will do fine.

Sorry if my post sounded inconsiderate. When I wrote it I thought it went for extended family also, so that would be like a distant uncle's death would count in that.

Sorry XD

I got 2 D's my whole High school career and I got one F senior year. But by that time I was not even caring cause I had already gotten into 4 schools by then... so basically all your work is done once you get into college...psssshhhh 2nd semester in HS I did not care about anything lmao...and I was the girl that never missed a day of school and I was on the honor roll...but I did my work so I just let it go when I got accepted into college cause thats all that mattered to me.....and when I got to college no one even questioned my previous grades. So Im thinking that you shouldnt even stress about it...if your in college your in.

But then again... I didnt have to have a specific grade point average because of my SAT score...so maybe you shouldnt listen to me...

i'm at a UC right now, got into like 3/7 UC's that i applied for and had a 3.1 gpa. i got 7 D's in high school. i think your in the good

i would say it depends on the UC u want to get into, if it's like berkeley or LA, i don't think so but any others, long as the rest of your stats are good (class position, gpa, sat's, community service) u should be ok for most other UC's. not sure about the policy but acceptance rate is just really hard to get into those schools

I thought that colleges ask for your high school transcripts after you get in, and if you have a D or an F you can get your acceptance revoked.

^ Yeah. I think you have to submit your transcript again senior year, and if you get a D/F, they can revoke your admission.
Thanks mama_gir1!

Usually university applications have a section called "extenuating circumstances" or something of that sort where you can explain these kinds of situations. Just be sure on every application to fill this part in! If it is clearly explained, it should not hurt you at all.
Usually one poor grade won't affect you that much, so you need not worry.
