"Toyota’s Celica sports coupe is set to make a return, albeit, in European markets only according to the carmaker’s German Chief Markus Schrick. The Celica was dropped from the market back in 2005, along with several other Toyota sports models such as the Supra and AE86 in previous years.
Speaking recently with Automotive News Europe, Schrick told reporters that Toyota was in favor of Germany keeping its speed unlimited autobahns and that such roads were “a unique selling point” for the country.
His fondness for the roads is likely to be because of Toyota’s revival of its sports car range. Along with the Celica in 2009, there will be the new LF-A supercar and possibly a new RWD entry level Toyota model. The first performance model to arrive, however, will be the Lexus IS-F, which goes on sale in March next year.
Schrick also admitted that “Lexus is struggling” in Germany and these new sports models are designed to raise awareness of the brand.
It’s likely any performance models developed for Europe will also be sold in the U.S., including cars like the new Celica."

That's very similar to another article I read, which is posted below. I think Automotive News is only using the "Celica" name to generate hype. There's no official word that it will in fact be named Celica, though these articles make it sound official. It'll be a Celica in spirit but could have a different nameplate. Like Shakespeare said, "What's in a name?" That which we call a Celica by any other name would smell as sweet. Besides, the Toyota Celica has already been replaced by it's abbreviation, the tC. But I do believe Toyota intends to bring sports back into their line-up, as shown by their recent FT-HS and LF-A concepts and release of the IS-F next March.
Here are some [ugly] rumored Celicas I've seen over the years:

Out of nowhere: Toyota says Celica replacement coming to Europe in 2009

In an article in Automotive News about Toyota's opposition to a maximum speed limit on Germany's autobahn, the publication's Deutsch counterpart, Automobilwoche, reported that Toyota intends to bring the Celica back to market sometime in 2009. The only semi-sporting model in Toyota's lineup was killed in 2005 both here and abroad, and although it doesn't mention sales in the U.S., it stands to reason that if Toyota does decide to revive the Celica, a model here in the States would be a distinct possibility.
What form the new Celica might take is open to debate, but the recent rumblings of a low-cost RWD model might hint at the future. If Scion gets the rumored rear-driver, is it too far of a stretch that an upmarket version could don the Toyota emblem? In short: we hope so.
Thanks for the tip, Dylan!

The 2005 "ugly" Celica looks the best IMO.
The only Celica's I like are the old school bug eye kind. The turbo AWD kind ;D
I would love to drive a MR-2 With the 2jjz? Engine in it, now THAT would be fun. Pokemon looking car on CRACK!

IS-F for Lexus? That's coming out this December. I recently talked to Lexus dealerships and it's coming out sooner than expected =)!

it's about time they made a new celica.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't the Scion TC the new Celica or at least its replacement?
