1. Grossly over priced.
2. Parts are rare, and
3. Hard to find one thats in good condition
I believe the same money and headache could be used better else were.
My cousin loves it to death and I'm thinking about selling my Miata, buying one of these, maintenancing it and then giving it to my cousin. Maybe I could persuade him to get a 240sx or something (Even these lil toys are over priced due to the drifting rage). I was going to give him my Miata, but he doesn't like the convertibles as much. He's such a Initial D rainbow.
What do you guys think? Do you think the AE86 is worth all the headache? My cousin's going to want a reliable, fun, original car... but would YOU go through all the trouble of getting a AE86 running?

The last time I checked an 86 for sale, it was $9,000, good condition, with a few mods. For $9000, I could get a 240sx and get my suspension done already plus some bolt ons.

the 86 was never fast from the start (commuter car)...and getting a starion in good form is rare. i would like to see a nicely done s12 though.

if most of the ppl who watched didnt glorify it, it probably would never reach the popularity it has now. but really, its a +20 year old car making it as the things op listed valid pts. plus the op mention original. no matter what the car will always be looked upon for drifting or initial d.

for a drift/fun car, it's on my list; but it's definitely not close to the top. it's like my 4th or 5th pick

I love ill-informed people. Almost got an Si Hatch from $500 from one of them.

$4,300 and that just shows how ridiculous it is. I'm not putting down drifting or the scene, but it died as soon as it got commercialized here in America. I give more credit to the grassroots scene than people like Stephan Papadakis who use to make his living in the drag scene (which doesn't do anymore) and goes into drift for fun (my happy poopoo). I wonder what's left out there in the world of driving that can't be capitalized on for financial gain. [/rant]

S chassis aren't all that great but if you want something to learn off of without worrying about crashing and spending weeks and weeks of the car being down searching for parts that will likely be expensive, then they are great to go with. Same thing goes for Miata's they are a great chassis to start and build off. If you are just now getting into the driving scene and want a Corolla you will probably have a lot of issues finding a clean un-molested chassis that isn't an SR5.

Of course it doesn't come with an interior, high mileage, needs a bit of bodywork, etc but he got it for $300 so I guess that's a good deal.

Just sourcing parts for the ae is a nightmare. I decided to give my cuz the Miata when he's old enough and pick up another project. Or if the price is right... sell the Miata and buy something else (even if I did all the maintenance work and know the car is in perfect shape).
