I'm wondering if I should consider buying one. My cousins loves them to death, but freaking.... they are:

1. Grossly over priced.
2. Parts are rare, and
3. Hard to find one thats in good condition

I believe the same money and headache could be used better else were.

My cousin loves it to death and I'm thinking about selling my Miata, buying one of these, maintenancing it and then giving it to my cousin. Maybe I could persuade him to get a 240sx or something (Even these lil toys are over priced due to the drifting rage). I was going to give him my Miata, but he doesn't like the convertibles as much. He's such a Initial D rainbow.

What do you guys think? Do you think the AE86 is worth all the headache? My cousin's going to want a reliable, fun, original car... but would YOU go through all the trouble of getting a AE86 running?

If I had the money, yes. Otherwise, no. 86s are super expensive. I don't give a rat's ass if they're in demand. High balling is high balling.

The last time I checked an 86 for sale, it was $9,000, good condition, with a few mods. For $9000, I could get a 240sx and get my suspension done already plus some bolt ons.

yes i believe they are overrated, they may be decent drifters once mods have been done, but otherwise i dont see the point of paying several grand for a +20 year old car. i like initial D and all but, that anime probably just added to this rage.

Thanks to commercializing the drift scene, any car with a fr layout can be overly priced it just depends on the seller. With $9,000, I can buy a 1998 2.5RS and get rid of my STi. There's really no point of buying an 86 unless you have time and money to spare.

dont buy an 86 if cash is what you're worried about. people want so much for high mileage trash cars and they are slow as hell in stock form. if your cousins thinking of getting one just so he can be takumi he's in for a suprise for the amount of work you need to do to get it to spec. get a starion or something...

the 86 was never fast from the start (commuter car)...and getting a starion in good form is rare. i would like to see a nicely done s12 though.

if most of the ppl who watched didnt glorify it, it probably would never reach the popularity it has now. but really, its a +20 year old car making it as the things op listed valid pts. plus the op mention original. no matter what the car will always be looked upon for drifting or initial d.

yes the 86 is overrated, i wouldnt buy one for the inflated prices they are now. i used to own one, i bought it off some mexican family for 1.4k. i sold it for 3k the next month lol. if you can still find one being owned by some people who are oblivious to what it is you might as well get it. but dont expect some magical car, in stock form they arent exactly great, the miata is much better.

the hachiroku is highly over rated.
for a drift/fun car, it's on my list; but it's definitely not close to the top. it's like my 4th or 5th pick

I love ill-informed people. Almost got an Si Hatch from $500 from one of them.

$4,300 and that just shows how ridiculous it is. I'm not putting down drifting or the scene, but it died as soon as it got commercialized here in America. I give more credit to the grassroots scene than people like Stephan Papadakis who use to make his living in the drag scene (which doesn't do anymore) and goes into drift for fun (my happy poopoo). I wonder what's left out there in the world of driving that can't be capitalized on for financial gain. [/rant]

I don't mind S13s because I can go to pick and pull for most parts and find whatever I want by just checking every few weeks. I also won't cry if I destroy something because I can likely find it within 24hrs. Corollas aren't as easy to find parts for most of the time. You will also find a lot of noobs who buy SR5s and end up trying to sell them or people who get SR5s to convert them using a GT-S rear end and end up asking more than they bargained for. A lot of people I know came up on deals for GT-S's before the craze or scammed someone into letting it go for cheap.

S chassis aren't all that great but if you want something to learn off of without worrying about crashing and spending weeks and weeks of the car being down searching for parts that will likely be expensive, then they are great to go with. Same thing goes for Miata's they are a great chassis to start and build off. If you are just now getting into the driving scene and want a Corolla you will probably have a lot of issues finding a clean un-molested chassis that isn't an SR5.

my first car was a 85 corolla gts, so ya cloeset thing to a real AE86. for the price that i paid for the car at the time (2300) in 2002 it wasnt too bad. but the maintence bill stacks up because stuff just wears out due to high mileage, parts just needs to be changed after one another.

so ya, i think its a lil overrated. but given the used car market that lacks of FRs. i suppose its ok....?

one of these guys at a shop I go to is selling his wrx and got an ae86. He bought it for $300 lol

Of course it doesn't come with an interior, high mileage, needs a bit of bodywork, etc but he got it for $300 so I guess that's a good deal.

See... i'd buy my cousin a $300 Dolla Ae86 and tell him to fix that thing up. It's just that there is no REASONABLE price for a good condition ae86. They are always over 2k. I'm not knocking down 2k for 20 year old car. My Miata cost me not even 3k and it's almost a decade younger!

Just sourcing parts for the ae is a nightmare. I decided to give my cuz the Miata when he's old enough and pick up another project. Or if the price is right... sell the Miata and buy something else (even if I did all the maintenance work and know the car is in perfect shape).
