so do u actually take ur time to concentrate on a song sometimes? as in listening to the instrumentals, beat etc as well as the singing.. most ppl tend to just sit there and "hear" music. well i guess it depends on the song.. i dont like how most songs these days have repeating intrumentals done by computers... it really gets annoying after awhile. thats one reason i stick to classic rock/rock. im not saying one genre of music is better than another... but i do appreciate music that is actually manually played over computer genrated ones. (nvm my d12 banner in my sig btw haha)

Hmm . . . good question. There are times when I'm just hearing the music because I'm doing other things at the same time. But, I do really listen to the lyrics, the beat, the melody - the way it is composed when I'm intentionally listening to it and not doing other things. So, I guess it's 50/50 for me : )

I just hear it.

Many of the times when I actually listen to the lyrics, even if I liked the tune, if I take the time to analyze the lyrics I find out how pointless the song is.

"But this, like all journeys should be, was also a journey of the self, and I ultimately learned some intangible qualities of the human soul. A musical thread connects us, consistently from civilization to civilization. And that thread runs through you just as it does me. What patterns, and colors it will weave as the course of history plays out is only limited by our imagination and ability to dream." - Wang Leehom

I do it sometimes. Sometimes if a song intrigues me enough, I listen for the background vocals, the words, the instruments, etc. But usually I don't have the time or patience to do that =P

I do listen to music. But then again I am always listenin to music. It helps each mood I am in. I have music at home, in the car, work, pretty much everywhere. And I love getting lost in the music, ive been like that since I was young. I've been listening more to artists like Susie Suh, Shivaree, etc cuz Im tired of generic beats and music

A lot of people just "hear" music because they're usually only turning music on as background noise for multi-tasking. Like having music on while talking on AIM, for instance.

So when I'm multitasking (music + watercolors, music + photoshop, or music + coding) I'm only "hearing" the music.
When I download new songs or buy a new CD though I always listen to it first. Otherwise you don't really know if you LIKE the song or not, do you? ~_~ Over the summer, I used to swing in the hammock in my dormitory courtyard and just listen to The Shins over and over again though. <3 good stuff.

When I hear a song for the first time, I pay attention to the lyrics especially, and then the other components. Afterwards, I just 'listen' to the music when I'm doing something else.
Be true
Be legendary you
So I won't sell out even if the whole world thinks I'm crazy
So hey hey this song is for us

It depends on what I'm doing; if I'm multi-tasking, like what someone above said, i'll just "hear" it...if I'm sitting in the car listening to my iPod i'll pay attention to it, since there's not much else to concetrate on. The majority of my songs are korean and chinese...I understand chinese lyrics but not korean ones all that well. The Chinese songs that I listen to don't contain much profanity at all, whereas the English songs that are popular nowadays contain sooo much. This is one of the reasons why I don't really listen to popular English songs...the lyrics are all pretty dirty. As for Korean songs, I like listening to some of the funny English in the songs sometimes =] But for me to enjoy a song, I'll have to like the music and beat as well though, and not just the lyrics. There are two different types of people...music people and lyric people. I think most people are music people though, much like myself.
Let's commit the perfect crime. I'll steal your heart. You steal mine.

"do you listen to music or just skim through it?" - jay-z

your title just reminded me of that quote hah

but to answer your question... it depends on the song and artist. if its an artist that i KNOW has messages and real content in their lyrics, then yeah i listen actively.

I listen to all songs I like. To me, there's no point in liking a song if I just "hear" it. There would be no meaning to it, and I may as well be listening to any other crap like DBSG or something.

lol rarely. I'listen' to it when I'm hearing the song for the first time, to decide whether or not I should keep the song or when I'm extremely bored and I have no choice but to listen to the song. but most of the time, I only hear it

That's is a very good question, indeed. I like to listen to the lyrics of a song. There is always a story to tell in a the lyrics and it gets me interested. And mouthing the song is another hint that your actually listen to it. Then there comes multi-tasking which may distract you from actually listening to the music itself. All in all I"m a lyric person.

I "hear" music when I'm doing homework and when I'm driving. I only really listen to the actual music when I'm sitting on my bed or in the passenger seat.

Yeah, I listen to music. I have to turn it off when I'm doing homework or something else though because I always pay attention to every song I listen to. I feel retarded sometimes because I cry when I listen to sad songs and my sister looks at me weird -.-;; But it depends if I like the song or not really o__o If I'm really concentrating on something (like I'm working in PS) then I usually just "hear" the music.
