if not, the old cliche -- drink warm milk, or being active in the day would help. having a fixed sleeping pattern is also good.
also, check this thread - How to sleep less and have more energy. there's some info there on sleeping patterns and more.

otherwise, there may be some issues in your life you need to resolve which are keeping you from sleeping at night. sometimes this may be a sub-conscious thing. it's certainly happened to me before!
the quickest solution for an easy rest, though, is melatonin. sometimes it even gives you a dreamless sleep but that's not always the case.

however, i found that i ALWAYS fell asleep in the end. even though by then it would be early in the next day or something... i still got some sleep.
you should just lie on your bed. lol yea just think about stuffs,, NON STRESSING STUFF! & try not to think about the fact that you cant sleep cos i reckon it makes you feel worse. do that whenever you cant sleep & eventually you WILL be able to sleep =)
OR you could exercise really hard in the day && make yourself SO TIRED that u cant stay awake. lol did i just hear exercise? sigh;;
goodluck with that though.... & SLEEP TIGHT!

1) What's the reason? Psychological, medical, etc. Figuring out the reason may help you figure out the best course of action. If it's just some new stress or problem, obviously when that justs ironed out, you will probably slide back into your regular sleep pattern. If there doesn't seem to be anything you can think of, and it continues for an extended period of time, you should possibly see your doctor.
Personally I have a sleep disorder, it gets worse with stress, but it is a medical condition. I never get good sleeps, and sometimes I will go through phases of days with no sleep. When I was pregnant it was horrible.
2) Try reading with a dim light before bed,
3) Try tea or warm milk
4) NEVER have a nap in the day
5) Get your body up 1-2 hours earlier in the morning and stay up 1-2 hours later at night until you can get back to normal.
6) Melatonin works for some,
7) If you can't fall asleep in 20 minutes, get up! Don't lay there any longer. Watch TV, read a book for 20 mintues and then go back to bed and try again. Can't sleep again? GET UP!!
8) Try to sleep on the couch, another room, etc., sometimes changing locations will help you fall asleep. Another option for #7, and never stay more than 20 mintues there either awake.
9) Tried all the above?
10) Sleeping pills - Some are highly addictive and then you won't be able to sleep without them. The one I take is Trazadone, and I only take it if I can't fall asleep or I really NEED to get a GOOD nights sleep. I can take 50-100 mg on a bad sleep phase daily and then stop. Obviously I don't get the really deep sleeps that I do when I am on them, but the point is I can still sleep without them, not great, but I never have had great sleeps either.
There seems to be such a stigma against these sleep aids. I wouldn't suggest them to someone who doesn't have a chronic sleep disorder or medical condition and definitely not without a doctor overseeing the meds as well. They definitely have to be self-monitored and professionally monitored so that they are not abused and become a problem.

Good luck!

if lying in bed too long, start doing some exercise, get your heart pumping or something.
but nromally if u do enough exercise during the day, u should be able to get to sleep easier

Emptying your mind of course is impossible, but you can lose focus.
Like instead of following every thought that crosses your mind, let your mind step back from them.
i like to imagine my thoughts like a "slide show" that keeps on moving, but i don't pay attention to it.
i don't know if that helps with your sleeping problem, but if i'm sufficiently tired, then this will almost always work for me.

Any method of meditation will help. For me, the slide show works. I just picture two pieces of paper falling into the darkness. One is white, and the other is black. They fall and fall until I knock out. Works for me. That's one method of meditation.
And make sure you're not confusing insomnia with everyday problems such as stress or if you're just not tired enough to sleep.
