i feel a little dumb, i can't seem to play any videos (wmv or mp4 -- which is what the P2 supports) that i put into the player.
do i need to encode the videos before hand?

Yes, you will have to convert the video because the video must have the exact specs that the player accepts. Click on the link below, there are alternatives to converting the video if you don't want to use the software that came with it.

SMS is easy once you get the know-how hang of it.
Just click on the video tab; add the video of choice; click the conversion button in the middle; advanced settings comes up and select 30 FPS instead of the standard 15 FPS; and you're done!
