then why dont you just follow the speed limit?
common sense will tell you that would be a cheaper alternative

Common sense tells me that following the speed limit 100% of the time is highly unlikely. Common sense also tells me that the pros of having a radar-detector in my possession far outweigh the cons. Being the fine, upstanding citizen that you are, you may not have a need for a radar-detector. However, your impeccable sense of morality is certainly not helping me choose a radar-detector for myself; which is, of course, the entire point of this thread. If you don't have anything to contribute to that specific cause, please don't post in this thread. Many thanks.

It's an investment really. I couldn't tell you how many times it's saved me from a ticket (cops around here will get you for anything, even 5mph over if you're alone at night). If it saves you from even just one incident, it would've paid for itself - fines, traffic school, insurance rates, etc.
It's nice to know, even if you're doing 5-10mph over the limit on the freeway or following the flow of traffic, when a cruiser is merging onto the freeway beside you - or behind you, or if one's sitting on the other side of the freeway. Arrows ftw
good luck with your decision!

Around $200 or less.
Help him to find one not convince him to get a V1, although you guys make a good point.

keep in mind that these are radar detectors NOT preventers. having a radar does not mean you can excessively speed around everywhere, you still have to take caution of your surroundings and use better judgement on when and where to speed as you ARE breaking the law when doing so. i think there was good advice given earlier about not speeding and not being worried about tickets, or god forbid some sort of accident.

i am contributing. i am sorry if my response was not good enough for this great thread of yours.
You want somthing good but you dont want to pay for it. Go ahead and go the half assed route. You will end up ditching the cheap unreliable unit and buy a good escort or v1 unit later anyways. do it right the first time so you dont pay more in the long run. Top ranked/best selling detectors are over 200 dollars for a reason. Until you can actually afford a good one... you are better off following the speed limit or else risk getting tickets because you cant follow the "speed limit 100% of the time".

I'm glad you actually had a suggestion this time. Admittedly, I don't know much about radar detectors, which is precisely the reason I made this thread. I wasn't planning on 'half-assing' anything, I was simply taking price into consideration before making a purchase; that doesn't sound unreasonable, does it?
Thanks to everyone who replied. You've all made it perfectly clear that the V1 is the way to go. I was initially skeptical about it's worth, but I was ultimately swayed after reading the testimonials on the valentine website. Looks like I'll be saving for a bit longer...
