This happened to me a while ago. I was driving on the highway behind this pick up truck and a bucket fell off it. I would have swerved, but I was driving in the middle lane and there were cars on the either side of me and I didn’t want to hit them, so I had no choice, but to keep driving forward while braking, hitting the bucket instead (I was going 75 mph). It caused a crack in the front of the bumper. I was lucky that it was just a bucket.
But, what if it was a huge, heavy object like a metal cabinet or something and there's no way to avoid it? What are you supposed to do in that situation?

how about stay as far back as you can, if it means slowing the hell down, then slow down and proceed to change lanes.
put as much distance between your vehicle and the truck that's in front of you, especially if said truck has crap in the back.
if it's a huge metal cabinet, and there are cars on each side of you, then you gotta step on the breaks and pray that god loves you.

Remember the name of the license plate. Honk that MOFO down. Call the police for back up.

Not get yourself in that situation in the first place by not driving behind cars with tons of crap in the back that looks like it might fall out? O_o

Hopefully you got the license plate number, call your insurance company and followed the driver and explain the situation.

Youre supposed to get the plate # of that vehicle and file a claim with your insurance....
Oh and just brake. Its your only choice... By the time you have a chance to swerve/switch lanes you might endanger too many people... Just brake and hope you dont hit the object or get rear-ended.
