Ok,
Here it is. Our company gives us rewards points that can be swapped for goodies (whole lot of different kind of goodies). On the list is a Canon G9, and a Nikon D40.
What would you do? Would you rather get the best Compact avaliable, or would you rather get the cheapest DSLR avaliable?

ISO performance itself is enough to choose the nikon d40 over the canon g9
unless mobility is your priority, the DSLR 'SHOULD ALWAYS' win out

It depends on what you have. I already have a DSLR so I'd get the compact but the Nikon D40 is the better choice if you don't have a DSLR. Anyway it's a win win situation imo smile.gif

I'm biased because I gave dSLR already. So I voted dSLR... but honestly, it depends on the person. Most of the people around me wouldn't ever buy a dSLR... they thinks its too much of a hassle, too complicated, too big, too heavy and too many things to buy. If I had a lot of money, I'd buy a G9 as a backup for the times I didn't want to carry around my SLR... somtimes it's just a pain to whip out a SLR to take pictures of friends and family at dinner.

Yea i also agree tt it's a win-win situation.
If u hvn't already got a DSLR then definitely go for it, u can settle for the compact as a backup ^.~

Chose the compact. The Canon G9 has 99.999% of the features of a DSLR.
honestly... you're not half as special as you think you are.

LOL... and to think I was considering spending a few hundred dollars a new lens for my camera when it's only worth 0.001% of a G9.

Feature for feature the Canon G9 can match most DSLR's, it even has RAW file support. The only thing it lacks is exchangeable lenses, and actually being a DSLR. DSLR's are overkill for most people. I can think of at least 2 people that have DSLR's that never use any of the features and only got them because they "look cool".

IMHO...
interchangeable lenses allow flexibility with aperture and DOF control. ISO performance of any nikon/canon dslr will simply blow away that of any compact. autofocus and burst speed of dslr's are unmatched by the g9. g9's a very capable camera, but simply matching the majority of features don't make the g9 'as capable' as the dslr.

i thought we were discussing features and not the end user???
comparing the two cameras, the g9 and the d40(or any dslr for that matter), the g9 can't compete
