[2] When was this?
[3] Why did you like this car?
[4] How did you end up with the car you have?
[5] Do you regret it?

[1] I wanted the Scion tC. This was my one and only choice.
[2] This was in 2004. I had been staying up-to-date on its progress since the beginning (March?) of that year, but it wasn't released until August. I was in college and cargo space was a factor.
[3] I had already sold my '00 Celica GT (auto) privately and was in the market for a new car. I had practiced stick twice on my uncle's '84 BMW 3-series and was set on making my next car stick. The tC was coming out fresh and cheap at the time... it was time I went past the boy-racer image of the Celica for the more sophisticated, mature look of the tC. In late July, dealerships didn't have any for sale on the lot yet - only test drive models. The salesman hooked me up with a test drive. I had no clue what to look for in driving a stick. The "test drive" really ended up being a practice session on an empty side road. He even let me take it on the freeway, which was my first time driving stick shift on the freeway. From the sales guy's perspective, that's what I call dedication! It felt stable accelerating up the curved on-ramp. The fit and finish was Lexus-like with solid thuds upon closing the doors. That Japanese paper-textured dash was nice. And it felt waaay more powerful than my uncle's BMW and my Celica. Plus it had that Toyota reliability for a bargain price. I was 7th on the wait list to get a dark gray one. I had plans to upgrade it with a TRD supercharger, which was under development at the time.
[4] A couple days after the test drive, Toyota announced the discontinuation of the Celica. This squashed the rumors of the fabled 8th gen Celica. I liked how my (sold) Celica looked, handled, and had that Toyota reliability. But I just wished mine was a GT-S, stick shift, and black. With it being discontinued, I realized the Celica just could not get any better while the tC would only see improvements every model year. There was only one manual GT-S left in all of San Diego County, but it was silver. Within hours of bringing this new vehicle into consideration for a very serious purchase, I was like, "Screw sophistication, I'm getting the Celica." I'm such an impulsive buyer.
[5] Looking back I wish I had gotten a black MkII MR2 Turbo, except I needed cargo space for college transport. Or a black MkIV Supra TT, although I didn't have the dough. One of those cars would suit me just fine right now. But given my situation at the time, I don't regret. And tC's are so commonplace that sophistication doesn't even come to mind anymore. Still a very solid commuter car, though.
