ok, so i use this ancient comp at home that doesn't have high speed USB ports (so they arent 2.0)
can i downlod software to upgrade them or do i have to get new hardware? thanks

First off, this needs to go into the right section, troubleshooting.
You will need to buy new hardware, such as a USB 2.0 card or even if you want to go that far, get a USB 2.0 and Firewire combo card.
Just as note though, some older OSs, don't support USB 2.0, like for instance Windows 2000, without additional drivers or service pack updates.
