I've been debating for a long time whether I should check the optional 'race' box. I've been told by some to not put down that I am Asian because it will be a disadvantage since Asian applicants are so strong, and that colleges don't like Asians dominating their colleges. However, I've been told by others that my last name will make it obvious and that it will seem as if I'm trying to "game" college admission officers by not being honest. What do you guys think?

They'll know anyways. Don't lie about it. Just check Asian if you're Asian.

actually, if you are philipino (i don't know what ethnic group you are), i've read how some philipinos pretended to put down that they were like latin-american (i.e. mexican) instead of asian/filipino-american in order to gain an advantage. i wouldn't do that btw, because that can give inaccurate statistics about a school
this reminds me of the recent count-me-in campaign in the UC system.
