ive owned a ipod video 5th gen 30gb (the exact same one you want to buy) and ive passed it on to my sissy. its still really nice device still. the newer ipod 6th gen classic (aka the successor to the ipod video 5th gen) is practically the same thing, except with an aluminum casing, coverflow (sorta gimmicky feature) and split menus (the latter 2 are sluggish during normal use, so ive read in a few reviews) -- relatively minor additions. the biggest thing in the 5th gen to the 6th gen that they fixed is the plastic chassis, which scratched easily...but i guess if you put it in a case, take good care of it, or dont care

then it wouldnt be a prob!
and if you get a good deal, id say go for it.

what are the major differences in previous generations and new generations? (how many generations are there.... wacko.gif )
i guess theres 6 generations of the standard ipod. theres a wikipedia article on the development on the ipod; read it if you want to know. but basically, they started with a mechanical wheel (1st), touch wheel (2nd), wheel and buttons (3rd), colour screen (4th), video (5th), same thing again but in aluminum (6th).
i pattern i've been noticing in the generations, is that they seem to go from that scratchable plastic to aluminum to plastic to aluminum again
