I've got a new laptop but I don't know what kind of router to get. I've seen some from shops but I'm not sure how far the internet can go. Like, if I travel somewhere far, would the internet connection still be on?

Because some of them says that its only for home use. Does that mean that you can only use it wireless around your house?

Can someone help me please. Thanks

And can you also suggest what kind of router I should get and what I should look for. Thanks

I have the linksys wrt150N it says 3x rangemark and 9x speedmark. I don't know the range, but everyone on my street can pick it up.

Wireless routers are indeed mostly for home use; their range is decent (~100+ feet). So about a house over or more; but it depends if there's interference (walls, other electronics etc.)

Linksys WRT54GL <-- click link for more details. This is the most common that can be found in most stores and goes for about $50 and is really easy to setup!

If you want to use wireless anywhere (well, just about anywhere). There's the cell-phone + laptop card route; a bit costly but the speeds (3G for Sprint) are nice.

Most providers have something similar. Verizon, Cingular, Spring etc. I use Sprint and was able to test drive it for a month and I did.

It's $59.99 - Unlimited (on sprint). I was able to get 600 kb/s in my home. I haven't tried it in Seattle, but I'm sure I'd get some insane speeds.

http://www.sprint.com - on the left look for "Mobile Broadband Cards" and click that.

Thanks. I live in the UK so I can't use those.

Do I have to subscribe to a network and pay monthly??

Yeah, you would have to pay monthly its similar to getting a cell phone except its only for data. Some phones/plans will let you connect your phone to your laptop and let you go online anywhere but of course check with the options of your phone and plan before trying it or it might be expensive :x

If you want it to travel you will need an Internet card. Routers are used for the home usually.

umm yeah routers are for home use hehehe. a normal one can go for your whole house hehe
if you want to travel... you'll need a wifi card (i'm sure your laptop comes with one already) and go somewhere
with wifi...............=/

as for brands, i got a Net Gear one .... it's pretty good except the phone blocks the wireles signal><
linskys is pretty good too i guess...
but yeah, routers are rather hard to set up (well maybe it's just me =/) but you have to follow directions EXACTLY hehe

D-Link FTW! And to answer your question, if you TRAVEL somewhere far, your laptop will not be able to connect to your router.
