I Heard That.. about penn state's personal statement

i heard from a very reliable person that penn state doesnt even look at your personal statement so i heard that i shouldnt even waste my time on it..is this true??

if it was pointless, why would they make you do it?

of course they look at it, every college has their own criteria that they judge on more than others, some colleges want higher GPAs, others, more emphasis on your AP scores/SAT/ACT. Personal statements can tell them everything that you can't say on paper already. You can't tell them that you took a humanitarian trip to zimbabwe for a semester in your transcripts or school ranking list, and it plays a big role in what type of person you are.

Admissions officers wouldn't look at your personal statement for one of two reasons: 1) your school records, test scores, portfolio (if it's an art school), essays and extra-curricular activities are amazing and above average and you have everything they need to fit into their school. 2) the combined above are all WAY below average that even your personal statement couldn't save you. Personal statements are just a little something extra for them to see so if they're not sure about you being admitted, they can read your statement and decide accordingly. They are people who want to like you and want to view you as more than a statistic on a piece of paper.
